UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Big Easy Winebar and Grill is the result of a collaboration between Virserius Studio, Beyond Hospitality and the design team of professional golfer Ernie 'Big Easy' Els. Its casual environment is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. The restaurant's design brings distinctly South African elements as well as a deep connection with its landscaped surroundings.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Even though Virserius Studio is based in New York and Paris, we work on projects throughout the world. During our conception stage, we spent time in the country where the project will be based, in order to more deeply understand its culture, language, ways of operating, design aesthetic. South Africa was no exception. Prior to construction, Virserius Studio took a weeks-long exploratory trip to Durban and other cities, to learn more about partners in the Big Easy project, including local artisans whose work would factor heavily in the final result.
CHALLENGE: This was our first project in Africa, so we had to take just about everything into consideration since working in Europe and USA requires a very different approach on things. Security concerns were bit different than what we were used to, so we gave that a lot of thought. Culturally, too, things move at a slightly slower pace than what we were used to in New York and even Paris, where our offices are based. How we went about things in general was different so we learned a lot and that is an asset we will bring to current and future projects. We wanted to make sure that the work we did for Hilton Durban was respectful of its weather and its culture so we sourced from local artists as much as we could and made sure that materials were durable and sustainable.
