DESIGN NAME: 3dtie lace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Necktie For Men
INSPIRATION: I was inspired by additive manufacturing technology to create a 3D printed fashion product. Modular and customizable architecture was inspired by modern software products and my previous work as a software architect. I dreamed of a necktie that could be converted to a bolo tie, or a bow tie, or a bracelet, or a bra, or customized with unique shapes, colors, images, or initials. The 3D printed fabric had to behave like a textile: flexible, strong, durable, quiet, and wrinkle free.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Modular and customizable, printed out of biodegradable plastic, 3DTie is a new category in the necktie fashion. Equally appropriate for a geek or a fashionista, 3DTie is as much a 3D printing technology showcase as it is a fashion statement and a great conversation piece.
A two-color 3d printed tie. Flexible fabric-like structure made of regular triangular tiles. Straight down shape, four tiles or 2 1/4" wide. The top color is cut out to produce a lace effect.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The knot and the blade are connected by a stainless steel bar, just like wristwach is connected to its band. This allows to replace the knot or the blade and to create many combinations. Neck-loop is made of flexible PLA and is easy to put on, take of, or adjust length.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started over 2 years ago in Sudbury MA. It was first presented at the Geek Picnic 2014 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The tie is 3D printed from PLA using FDM technology. PLA is the renewable, reusable, bio-compatible, biodegradable plastic - poster child of 3D printing. Geometry of the connections between tiles is inspired by non-manifold topology similar to the self-intersection required to present a Klein bottle as a 3 dimensional object.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The body of the tie is 3mm thick, 57mm wide and the tie is 450mm or 500mm long. It can withstand the pull of 20 kg.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 3dtie underwent thousands of iterations focusing on textile-like behavior of the digital fabric, geometry of the connections between the tiles, ease of use of the neck-loop, and repeatable quality. All ties now undergo automated testing.
CHALLENGE: The hardest parts were the design of the knot and the geometry of the connections between the tiles.
