| DESIGN NAME: Building Memories PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art Book INSPIRATION: Singapore did not become a first world country or a more livable city overnight. The nation was enriched by each and every one of its citizen every day for the past 50 years. The goal of the Building Memories is to engage individuals, communities, groups or institutions who have formed memories and content about the 4 national buildings in Singapore and would like to contribute them. As of now, 3 of the 4 buildings that had contributed in shaping the community of Singapore have been demolished. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The birth of Building Memories is a collaboration between an architect, an illustrator and a designer to create an interactive art book documenting the intrinsic histories and personal memories of four public buildings in Singapore. The essence of these structures is uniquely captured through intricate design elements such as replicated library cards, stadium invitations, collections of historical images to theatre architectural pop-up that allows people to re-experience their personal memories. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Interactive art book with 3D pop-up, replicas of historical printed materials and QR code directing to flip books. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started in 2014 and finished in May 2016 in Singapore. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As for book printing production, grey board cover was used to give it a raw finishing reflecting the genuine messages and stories within. Different printing technique was used with 2 run of white print before applying black and pantone printing. Multiples handworks are required in the construction of the 3D pop up, library borrowing card, and National Stadium Invitation card. Also incorporated 2 QR code for the technology savvy reader, enabling them to listen to an old National Anthem recorded in the 1959, and also a flipbook featuring a rare program booklet printed in 1960 during the opening of the Singapore Conference Hall. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Size: 175mm X 250mm, 19mm thick. Total 148 pages. Open spine thread sewn that will enable the front and back cover to be combined and form a complete piece of illustration. It also gives the binding more strength as multiple items like the Library Borrowing Card, 3D pop up and an invitation card was inserted in between the chapters. CHALLENGE: It was a challenge to have Building Memories published and be comprehended when there were a lot more other publications that have their book released the same time in celebration of Singapore 50th National Day and not forgetting the existing historical publications that has been in store. Extensive research, interviews and heavy illustrations works are needed to translate to a more engaging result.
