DESIGN NAME: Evironmentally Conscious hOme 1
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Environmentally Conscious Interior
INSPIRATION: Hong Kong is a metropolis that faces many problems as other big cities around Asia. With progressively worsening air quality though over development, restrictive living spaces, predominant reliance of agricultural importation, escalating dependent on fossil fuel as well as diminishing recycling system we believe we NEED to be much more environmentally conscious as well as more self dependent on our own food supply. We at COC design wanted to create an interior that can “help” rather than “burden” this Green Cause. “Luxury” does not mean using nature resourced material such as marble, real wood or luxury stone that diminish and pollute our planet. We promote that by using more cycled and artificial material that has good manufacturing ethics, we will live healthier with a progressively better environment. We also suggested, since the size of this project is sufficient, a 60-70% self reliant roof top vegetable farm can be placed as we are mostly vegetarians. Eco electric components are also used as much as possible to save on environmental impact as well as monthly electricity costs. We name this Environmentally Conscious hOMe 1, our first generation of this movement that is nearly non-existent in Hong Kong luxury residential design circle.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We took a very long time to research and choose what Eco-Furniture/Material to use as well as Low Energy Appliances and Green Energy Systems we can implement on this design. We spend many months online to source each product to the design as well as making sure the interior spatial organization will maximize usage while giving a highly contemporary and minimal feel. The Rooftop design is not merely beautiful but also implements the latest horizontal and vertical farming organization. The interior all use low voltage LED lighting and the rooftop is entirely Solar power illuminated. All these effort has made E.C.O 1 made up of 80% recycled/upcycle building components and products while also retaining a luxury look!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When a visitor enters into ECO 1's interior, he or she will assume the design is actually made of prominently natural materials such as stone or wood but nearly all of these are imitation or upcycled elements. We want the user to understand that one should avoid as much as possible in stripping away natural resources and be more environmentally conscious. Once the visitor ascends upon the roof he or she will also experience a highly contemporary lounge area with organic farming sections to compliment the design. This is to remind us the importance of agriculture within our planet and to value the essence of real food production.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started design phase in April 2015 and was completed in Nov 2016

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We started to design most of the furniture to be elevated from the floor as to make the space usage more efficient. We sourced most of our furniture from some of the most forward thinking eco friendly suppliers around the world; this includes a BPA free Styrofoam molded storage shelf, recycled cardboard dinning lamps, OSB particle wood board cladding system and furniture (same wood as used in most construction site), Ultra low voltage LED lighting, Artificial granite and wood cladding that is recycled from discarded building material just to name a few. Even the main art work on the wall, custom created by COC design, is inspired by the theme of “Living Green”. Few pieces of the rooftop furniture are Up-cycled by us from trash found in the scrap yard locally.
CHALLENGE: Spending lots of lots of time on Eco friendly materials and furniture. Urban home farming research. Changing the perception that a "recycled" design can look luxury. Extensive green technology research.
