| DESIGN NAME: Blanco Ikon PRIMARY FUNCTION: Kitchen Sink INSPIRATION: Our goal with the creation of the BLANCO IKON was to once again raise the bar for innovation in kitchen sink fixtures, states Tim Maicher, Marketing Director for BLANCO. After years of research, our engineers were able to deliver what was thought a technical impossibility a true granite composite apron front kitchen sink. BLANCO is the undisputed leader in granite sinks for more than three decades. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: BLANCO launches IKON the first Apron Front sink of its kind crafted from BLANCO’s patented SILGRANIT material, which combines on-trend color selection with extreme durability. This is the first apron front sink made of granite composite. It is resistant to heat, household acid, chips, scratches and comes in three colors. The science behind SILGRANIT offers a level of protection that ensures that the apron front on the IKON won’t scratch, and will maintain its beauty after years of use. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: IKON is made of SILGRANIT - the first apron front in this materials which benefits from Rock hard granite durability; Heat resistance up to 536 degrees; unsurpassed cleanability backed by industry leading 7 patents and resistance to scratches, stains and all household acids and alkali solutions BLANCO also offers a unique custom-fit Floating Grid accessory for use with the IKON, which can be used as an additional workstation for prepping and cleaning, or as a trivet on the countertop. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Launched at KBIS, January 2016, in prototype form and delivered to the market at April 2016. The IKON took years of research and development to bring to market. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The BLANCO IKON is the first apron front sink made from granite composite. This provides consumers and designers with a choice of colors and durability never before available with this iconic shape. For a generation, BLANCO has continuously developed and perfected our own exclusive industry-leading SILGRANIT material, which now features a new, smoother surface that is easier to clean. SILGRANIT sinks are beautifully designed and scientifically proven to be scratch, stain and heat-resistant, which makes the IKON apron front sink extremely durable. The sink is one of the most heavily used areas of the kitchen and apron front sinks experience more contact than traditional undermount sinks. The science behind SILGRANIT offers a level of protection that ensures that the apron front on the IKON won’t scratch, and will maintain its beauty after years of use. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 30” Apron Front Single Bowl Three color offerings: Anthracite, White, Café Brown 1.5” Rim, 9 ¼” Bowl Depth, 10” Apron Depth TAGS: kitchen, sink, apron front, single bowl, blanco, ikon RESEARCH ABSTRACT: “When designing, it is necessary to consider certain standards regarding the production process, materials and refinements,” Brigitte Ziemann explains.“Good design also requires interdisciplinary thinking,” Ziemann adds. “So we link our in-house design team with all relevant business areas which are involved in the product development process.” This emphasis on small teams and close ties brings designers together with product managers, technicians, and salespeople, allowing the design team to “attend to the process from the very first idea until market launch.” CHALLENGE: Making an apron front from granite composite was thought a technical impossibility and it took years to engineer and make a reality. The apron front takes a lot of abuse and this functional area of the kitchen requires a durable material that resist chips, scratches, drops, household acids, heat and more.
