| DESIGN NAME: Trapesi PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bistro table INSPIRATION: It was obvious people struggle when attending a public place, cafe as where to put their bag or purse. The challenge for me was to create a system that solves this problem. Preferably I wanted to integrate this system into the design of the table. I wanted the system not to act as an extension but rather as a design aspect of the table itself. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Trapesi offers a unique solution as where to hang your purse or bag at a public place. The legs are indirectly connected with the tabletop through the middle structure. This makes it look as if the tabletop is levitating and creates a more open feel. The four folds are the most important parts as they offer structural stability and functionality. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each corner of the table consists of a fold that can be used as a hook to hang a bag/purse on it. If so desired the fold can also be used as a compartment for your magazine or newspaper. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in January 2016 and ended in June 2016. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This bistro table is mainly composed out of 3 materials. The legs and tabletop are made from solid oak wood. The part in between with the folds at each corner was coated with a layer of polyurethane. This coating served two purposes. It gave the design a sleek satin look whilst at the same time reduced sharp edges to prevent any damage regarding the bags,purses hanged on there. It gives a more warm and soft feel on the hand. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Product: W 650mm x D 650mm x H 780mm Package: W 650mm x D650mm x H 400mm Because of the interchangeable parts the user can customize the look of the design or change damaged parts. The polyurethane coating make it possible to repaint over the current color. TAGS: Phebos Xenakis, Trapesi, Design, Furniture, Bistro table RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Trapesi is an answer to the problem many of us encounter. Where to place our bag when attending a public place. The integrated system creates an 'elevating' CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was to integrate a system with hooks without ruining the design. It was crucial for the system to be placed at an ergonomic position. The hooks or folds served not only as a design aspect but as a structural and functional aspect as well. Simply put, form follows function. The folds were made very fluent to increase stability and strength. In further development it would be considered a better idea to divide the middle part in 4 pieces instead of one big piece, this to decrease packaging space. NAME: Howest, Sixinch PROFILE: Trapesi was created during Phebos Xenakis his final year at Howest. The design was finalized during his internship at Sixinch. Phebos Xenakis (1994) is a young Belgian designer with Greek roots. After finishing his bachelor in Industrial Product Design in 2016 he pursued a career in the furniture sector. Howest is a university college situated in Kortrijk, Belgium. The school offers various types of studies of which one is Industrial Product Design. Sixinch is a design company that specializes in coated furniture. Over the years they have perfected their coatings and production techniques. Now the company is globally expanding at a fast rate with productions all over the world. |
