DESIGN NAME: Triple Reuse
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Installation
INSPIRATION: The inspiration to Triple Reuse one core element to address 3 different trade fairs came from the sustainability issue of trying to reduce as much construction waste as possible onsite and yet be as creative as possible. As such, a mobile truck was used throughout the three events and each version took on its own thematic approach to heighten the visual impact for their visitors. The thematic stories created related to the industry the fair represented, for instance electronic was futuristic transporter. Then housewares was a pop up flower shop and the last transformation was a candy store relating to the gifts and premium industry.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: During April 2016, 3 trade fairs were opened in succession and a series of welcome installations were required by the organizers to mark the entrance of the venue. Apart from providing each fair with its unique identity, the amount of onsite construction wastage had to be reduced during each transition. A mobile truck was used as a core format and morphed into 3 different themes to suit the related trade fair; futuristic transporter, European mobile flower shop and pop-up candy stall.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Operation wise all 3 trade fairs went smoothly since there was no heavy construction concerns during each change over. The mobile truck was modified in succession, starting with Hong Kong Electronic Fair then to HK Houseware Fair and finally to HK Gifts & Premium Fair. This Triple Reuse methodology is the most sustainable and cost effective designs in comparison to any previous years. Another important consideration was as visitor’s flow into the trade fair, this installation is the first impression upon arrival to the venue and a heighten visual impact was important for the industry represented.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Overall project duration was 3 months from concept to completion.
All 3 trade fairs were located at the Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Each trade fairs opened one after the other with 3 days for onsite setup. The series started with the Hong Kong Electronic Fair (13 to 16 April) followed by the Hong Kong Houseware Fair (20 to 23 April) then ending with the Hong Kong Gifts & Premium (27 to 30 April).

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: With only 3 days allowed for each setup onsite, the first version of the mobile truck was made off site and assembled together onsite. To ensure durability, the shell of the truck was made of plywood. Our formula to transform the overall image from one to the next in the most eco-sustainable manner was to use graphic stickers, hired all the props, change the A/V lighting and the title signage. Furthermore to heighten the sensory experience the flower shop used real flowers and the candy shop utilised the installation with a candyfloss fragrant.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: At 30m2 x 5m high, the mobile truck shell was made of plywood and finished with a silver sprayed paint finish and a 4mm LED side screen. In the next transition, the truck’s side door was completely dismantled and the vehicles’ interior was exposed. New signage and graphic stickers altered the appearance of the mobile truck. Fresh flowers and hired props were added to elevate the ambience. For the last change of the mobile truck, new graphic stickers were reapplied along with props and new signage to create a completely new look. The overall dimension of the mobile truck would be constant.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The data collected lead us to focus on transformative experience of one singular object; this was so more focus is on the ornamentation rather than making less eco-friendly structural changes to all 3 installations. We derived at the mobile truck idea from the aspect that it could resolve many challenges and aspects of this unusual design brief. From this, 3 different themes were created for each trade fair industries, without changing the core structural format. Therefore enabling us to minimised the amount onsite wastage during each construction.
CHALLENGE: In the trade fair design industry to achieve sustainable and produce an effective image upgrade were major challenges. After much research and collective thinking the TRIPLE USE solution was born to overcome these two obstacles. A case of form before beauty was the approach to ensure the any onsite wastage was minimised. This allowed each creative transformation to focus on art directing the hired props, graphics, lighting and title signage changes.
