DESIGN NAME: The Playhouse
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the New York – style loft, the main part of the lower level is organized into a social dining area featuring an immense reclaimed wood ceiling with various combination of tin ceiling panel above the custom-made communal dining table. A new experience of dining incorporated a vibrant teppanyaki counter. Equally creative, albeit relaxing atmosphere, the modern vintage theme continues to the upper level, where the interior embodies an eclectic mix of brass and concrete paneled ceiling.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Playhouse, a 6000-square feet, two-level apartment, is situated in a typical Hong Kong industrial building. Our client wants us to transform the space into a private hideaway for parties at the lower level and as a vacation home on the upper level. Recreated into an industrial loft, the materials have been carefully sourced worldwide. Aged Italian brick tiles, blacken steel I-beams and cement panels throughout complete the retro rustic atmosphere of a New York-style loft.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The lower level is a party, casual (private member’s club setting) environment with a professional kitchen. The upper level is for fine dining experience, where guest can stay over. The two levels can host two separate events at the same time.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2015 in Hong Kong and finished in March 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Concrete panel LCDA was used throughout the Playhouse- a wall cladding made from lightweight concrete. To ensure their product was installed and used properly LCDA made a visit from France to monitor the product on site. Pleasantly surprised and satisfied with the craftsmanship and installation works, LCDA approved of the results. The visit also helped LCDA suggest using a protective sealant instead of a raw finish without treatment to prevent stains on the wall.

CHALLENGE: The project is completed within nine months, where majority of the materials used in the Playhouse were sourced internationally. A lot of the materials require testing before final installation. For example, to produce the bronze suspended pipe shelving, the final product is a combination of locally and internationally sourced parts. To ensure the final outcome is satisfactory and to maintain the cost of the project many of these material applications require time under a tight deadline.
