| DESIGN NAME: Hurricane PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desktop Lighting Installation INSPIRATION: It starts as an exploration of free form and parametric design. The scene started to look different when you have printed over one hundred objects in two years. “Hurricane” is the word to describe local extreme weather condition in summer. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Light is both dynamic and static. I want to create a scene which switches characters in different conditions. This desktop lighting design creates a contrast image of dynamics and statics, opacity and transparency, solid and void, and defined boundary and infinite reflectivity. A number of frozen hurricanes in the center not only deliver the image of dynamic interaction between each other, but also create a different contrast between solid force and void field. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This installation is intended to be placed on table top. It not only delivers an attractive scene when its light in on and the ambient light is dark, but also displays as a sculpture when its light is off and the ambient light is on. The double-layered boundaries represent the void field that holds the inter-reflection that is visible while light is off. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started from scratch since 2014 in Taipei, Taiwan. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The 3D shape design of hurricane is made by parametric adjustment of curvature and wave frequency. With the control of magnitude, the final shape and size is adjusted in order to collaborate with neighborhood field and object. Each piece of hurricane, which is made of ABS, is made by the Fused Deposition Method (FDM) rapid-prototyping (RP) technology in white color. The two acrylic boxes are centered with the LED light allocated in between. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 30cm*30cm*30cm TAGS: lighting installation, metaphor, reflection, void space RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The metaphor of hurricane was created by the parametric design approach and 3D-printed in ABS in white color. As stated before, light is both dynamic and static, the hurricane metaphor was able to be created. The upward light projection simulates the force which drives the element of different shapes and orientations in turbulence. CHALLENGE: Stimulated by a scene and substantiating the meaning behind it is always the challenge. The interpretation, creation, and re-interpretation present a design process that doesn not always return to the origin. The first challenge was to create a solid image next to the void one to extend the virtual boundary of the design. The reflection inside the double-layered box did it. The second one was to distribute light from the bottom to the top without too much reduction. The arrangement of hurricane pieces solved most of the problem. NAME: Naai-Jung Shih PROFILE: Shih received his Master of Architecture and Doctor in Architecture degrees from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, University of Michigan. He is a professor in the Department of Architecture, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, since 1991. He has been working on 1. Architectural design studios in graduate school and undergraduate for 25 years. From computer-aided design to traditional architectural space manipulation, I always like to try different technologies for reality and metaphor. 2. VR by object-based and image-based approaches; 3. RP of different materials and tools 4. 3D scan projects for cultural heritages, temples, historical settlements in Beipu and Jieufen, urban fabrics of Taipei, and as-built progress monitoring of construction schedule for 15 years. |
