| DESIGN NAME: Carnival of the Animals PRIMARY FUNCTION: Clinic Waiting Area INSPIRATION: Our design is inspired by the story of the child book : Noah’s Ark. Imagine we were in the ark; see the view outside through the windows. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Based on the concept of paper craft and pop-up book, we transformed animals’ images into abstracted patterns and lines, cutting them with steel plate, then, painted colors behind the white steel plate to express the image of rainbow, let rainbow presented in this whole area. At the same time, used mirrors to reflect the steel plate; showed scenes Noah lead animals boarding pair by pair. Long mirror-wall reflected light in this space, make it looks relaxing and multi-levels. When children visit, they could ease their tension by exploring around with their imagination. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We stretch thin steel plate to cover the whole space from the wall to ceiling. Punched many different sizes of holes on steel-shell of column which near the window. Through these holes, children could see the painting on the column. Space levels would vary when children’s action changed. When light came through the casting, made shadows show different depths; also distinguished from original ceiling. Furniture were placed spontaneous, like the dash of foam on the deck. Additionally, colors of rainbow were used in the furniture and painted on the back of casting. We regarded every outpatient-clinics as land of hope, wish this space be blessed. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Leaser cutting and bending. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 90sqm TAGS: Carnival of the Animals, Children's Hospital,Studio. Ho RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Trying to break the impression of existing waiting area, Extending the level of the space and transform the waiting mood; could have more possible not just waiting and transition. Interlace the sunlight and shadow on the ship to constitute a mildness between the people and the space. CHALLENGE: This design is a donation case; we had limited fund to made idea achieved. At first try, steel plate is too thin to bend, they always broken. However, if we develop a new mold to warp the steel, it coast way too much. So, it was important to balance both design and construction.
