DESIGN NAME: Chiuso
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Parasol
INSPIRATION: While sitting on a terras you always see the ugly innerside of a parasol, to hide the ugly inner frame of the parasol we covered the inside with delicate lace.
restants... we had some leftovers from an other parasol design, and we used the leftovers to create this parasol. turned out to be a beautifil parasol who helped us minimize waste on the lace fabric.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Chiuso literally means closed. LMMH Lieven Musschoot and Mathias Hennebel find the inside and outside of the parasol equally important. That is why they have decided to cover the complete inside of the frame with fabric, thus extending the outer beauty to the inside. You will fully enjoy its beauty when relaxing under the parasol.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The parasol is opened and closed by hand.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in september 2014 in Bruges and finished in August 2015 in Bruges, and was exhibited in Maison and Object at Paris September 2015.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: First of all we researched the shape of the parasol, what could we do to cover the underside? the objectives where an easy to produce the parasol but still looking good. We made dozens of prototypes ranging from shape towards the use of different fabrics and different production ways. These prototypes where evaluated for functionality, design, and cost by the ceo, sales and product development. We used cad programs to design patterns, lasercutters to cut fabrics to obtain the best possible results.
CHALLENGE: to join 2 different fabrics so there are no wrinkles on the outside and on the underside.
