DESIGN NAME: SHAUGHNESSY MANOR
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Private Residence
INSPIRATION: Homeowner with diverse, international clientele desired residence that combines traditional, Old World grandeur with a modern, open-concept aesthetic. Result: a home that transitions effortlessly from formal business entertaining to casual family living. Shimmering crystal chandeliers and secret rooms add a whimsical playfulness to the overall opulence and comfort. Lower-level, interior piazza replicates the romance of an outdoor English garden/pavilion.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A two-storey foyer introduces this residence’s unifying theme of opulence: inlaid marble flooring, domed ceilings with silver-leaf inlay and hand-painted motifs, exotic-wood millwork, and custom-designed metal filigree accents. Floor-to-ceiling columns plus archways and curved transom windows add architectural weight and visual grounding. Many functional necessities are artistically hidden: air-conditioning vents concealed behind moulding details, sprinkler heads in ceiling motif. Lower-level pool features hand painted mural where forced-perspective creates illusion that a pathway behind the fully-functional fountain is always moving away from the observer.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This new-built, luxury residence had to be visually compatible with existing heritage homes in one of Vancouver’s most venerated neighbourhoods. Classic English architecture sets an immediate tone of elegance and grandeur. A 7-metre high foyer is resplendent with imported Greek marble, exotic crotch mahogany millwork, 1.52x2 meter crystal chandelier, and custom-designed wrought iron railings introduce the visual themes that reoccur throughout. Unusual space usage includes an upper floor hallway designed to double as informal art gallery, an enclosed pool/bar that replicates the ambiance of an outdoor entertainment piazza, and a secret children’s playroom concealed behind a wall panel.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2013 and finished in March 2015. The project is locate in Vancouver, B.C. Canada

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Exquisite furnishings and richly-textured accents complement this home’s classic architectural details. Hand painted motif details (foyer and living room), a custom-designed filigree pattern first showcased in the foyer’s marble flooring (where patterning has been precision cut by water jet technology) and wrought-iron staircase railing set recurring theme of opulence that’s still approachable. Whole-house Control-4 technology goes far beyond integrating audio, visual, and security issues. Owner is able to “see” and interact with entire house, even when he is overseas thus providing the desired security for his family.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Extensive comparisons and cross referencing required to source materials that blend traditional aesthetic with contemporary materials. Collaboration with mural artist and heritage experts requited to create lifelike painted replica of an English Country Garden surrounding indoor pool.
CHALLENGE: Residence must meet both the owner’s extensive, international business entertaining requirements and his desire to provide a comfortable family home. Solution: incorporate luxurious, family-oriented spaces including casual dining room, theatre room, and lavish master suite with dressing room, marble-encased bathing area, and abundant natural light.
Home’s large scale required painstaking attention to proportions and monumentation (especially throughout the soaring, two-storey foyer) in order to maintain a sense of elegant yet airy grandeur.
Total building time from concept to completion was less than two years – a very short turnaround for a project of this size and complexity.
