| DESIGN NAME: Soft PRIMARY FUNCTION: Light INSPIRATION: The design inspiration comes from how she felt when she used an ordinary foam to clean her house. When she touched it, she felt softness and warmth. She tried to push it to change its shape, but she never succeeded. It always returned to its original square, like a stubborn child playing game with her. It is that feeling that attracted her, so much that she thought the foam could be a member at home. Therefore, she began to try to accomplish a household product made of foam. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Soft light could give you the feeling of company through the character of foam. When you feel lonely, you could play with it. It seems be nodding or bowing when the foam cover is pressed. Besides the fun of playing with it, some interest can be found when it is quiet too. The light through the yellow sponge is naturally dim, leaving home in quietness and warmth. Looking into the large or small pores on it and the lights coming out of them is a nice way to spend boring time. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: White and square form implies a simple and quiet feel, attracting people who see it to touch it, get feedback from it, or play with it. When you touch it, you will find do not like the feeling of what it looks like, it is very soft. And it turns on! Users could turn the light on by pressing the foam cover, and adjust brightness by changing the magnitude of the pressure. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 1. The maximum temperature of LED light is 100 centigrade, while melting point of foam is about 200 centigrade. 2. Pores up the base and on the side are created for ventilation. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimension of longest one is 110mm x 700mm x 144mm The dimension of middle one is middle one 250mm x 250mm x 300mm The dimension of smallest one is 50mm x 50mm x 90mm TAGS: foam, light, soft, intercation RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Foam is an interesting material which has its own characters. But few designers use foam in light design. The inspiration of Soft Light came from the feeling of foam, so the research started from this material, collected various kinds of foam and tested the plasticity of foam to see what happens. Safety is also an important aspect to consider. So she asked technician for professional advice and did some experiments to support. Professional data are also used as a reference. CHALLENGE: The challenge is how to shape the interior of the foam cover.
