| DESIGN NAME: Lightscape PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pavilion INSPIRATION: Inspired by traditional Chinese lanterns, Lightscape combines digital fabrication methods with local materials in the form of a lightweight, luminous pavilion. Each of the pavilion’s ten columns is composed of crisscrossing bamboo dowels. Ensconced within the base of each column is a lamp that illuminates the bamboo lattice from within. In the evening, light gently passes through the thin bamboo dowels to create a soft, delicate atmosphere. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lightscape is installed at Marina Bay, Singapore, underlining the striking contrast between the rapid urbanization of the Marina Bay area and the traditional crafting methods and materials used to create the pavilion. In its current location, the pavilion echoes both the vertical grandeur of the skyscrapers behind it and the soft undulations of the bay before it. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The lamps at the base of each column in the pavilion emit a warm glow that intensifies as the viewer approaches, symbolizing the energy imparted by human interaction. The pavilion consists with four columns, which host larger canopy and plywood furniture underneath as well as six individual display columns with laser cut acrylic figures. The visitors can enjoy the overall atmosphere of pavilion at the same time finding their favorite figures on the columns. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Proposal to finalization of the design lasted from August 2015 to November 2015. The component parts of the pavilion were assembled in Taiwan from January 2016 to February 2016, and construction was completed in Singapore in March 2016. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Standardized dowels and acrylic joints digitally fabricated through CNC laser-cutting and drill-milling were essential to creating the pavilion’s organic shape. The components of the pavilion were constructed in Taipei, Taiwan, and then shipped over to Singapore, where they were reassembled on-site in three days. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The main canopy spans 8 meters wide, 4 meters deep, and 2.4 meters tall. The display stand heights vary from 1.2 meters to 1.5 meters tall. The total area of Lightscape is approximately 66 square meters. TAGS: MisoSoupDesign, Daisuke Nagatomo, Lightscape Pavilion, Bamboo, Singapore RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Lightscape Pavilion exams possibility of utilizing digital fabrication tools, such as CNC milling machine and laser cutter for full-scale architectural assembly. By incorporating standardized dowels for most of structural members, the digitally fabricated acrylic joints plays major role of forming an organic shape structure. The focal point of this experimental project is to propose a local solution of global digital fabrication phenomenon. CHALLENGE: The most challenging point for the pavilion assembly was to figure out the structural capability of the hollow bamboo columns. Intensive structural test was made for several prototypes to exam its capability and finally configured weaving bamboo dowels structural system. Bamboo dowel is not only the essence of the design, but also traditional inheritance of Asian culture. Lightscape Pavilion is creative combination of tradition and new production technologies. NAME: MisoSoupDesign PROFILE: Founded by Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, MisoSoupDesign is an architectural design studio that concentrates on the process of making. After graduating from Columbia University GSAPP (Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation) and worked in New York for many years, they decided to achieve the dream of making a project come true, by joining Solar Decathlon Europe 2010, and dedicate in the research of sustainability. After that, they began to apply the systematic way of thinking in both architecture and product design, and discover the surprising moment when form meets function. Currently, MisoSoupDesign has offices in Tokyo and Taiwan, and they are both Assistant Professor at the National Chiao Tung University. Received awards include A’Design Award Golden award, 7th Far Eastern International Digital Architectural Design Award, and ACADIA architectural competition 1st prize. |
