DESIGN NAME: Nextbit Robin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smartphone
INSPIRATION: Instead of chasing the formulaic look of the current smartphones, the goal was to find a design gesture and language that conveyed a different set of values. As such, the phone's design was inspired by a simplicity and naivete in the visualization of a traditional phone's architecture. Unlike the metal phones littering the market, Robin is made with glass filled polycarbonate for a fresh and unique feel.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Robin is the first smartphone designed to never run out of space. Cloud storage is integrated into the OS enabling Robin to archive the things you use least, so you always have space for what you want most.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By integrating the cloud into the operating system, Robin learns your habits and gets smarter every day so you never have to worry about downloading an app or taking a photo. Instead of a typical phone with a finite amount of space, Robin actively moves apps and photos between the cloud, allowing people to store more than a comparable phone. The design of Robin is effortless. The placement of every port, button and sensor is thoughtfully considered to feel intuitive and harmonious.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Robin was conceived in February 2015. Design and Engineering were completed in September 2015 and it was announced at the same time. Robin shipped to first customers in February 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Nextbit Robin is one of the thinnest phones available today. The thin housing was achieved by a special mixture of hardened PC resin which allowed us to achieve rigidity and structural strength beyond what is typically possible on a product of this size. After hand polishing each housing part, every detail is precision machined to insure ultimate fit with absolute minimal part tolerances. Robin is then coated with an ultra smooth finish which is beautiful to the touch and provides a premium sensory experience.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The first question to ask was what are the biggest pain points that people have in smartphones. One of the most significant problems was their phones run out of space. Once their phone ran out of space once, they would then spend time periodically clearing out unwanted photos and applications. In addition, it became clear that people were bored with smartphone design, no phone really stood out.
CHALLENGE: Developing a simple design and maintaining that simplicity through the development process was the most difficult aspect of creating Robin. It was incredibly important to us to keep the phone crisp, with a defined rectilinear shape and minimal contours. As such, we created hundreds of patterns for the phone's various elements, including speakers, buttons, cases, etc. This meticulous attention to detail is what eventually led us to Robin's simple, playful design.
