DESIGN NAME: Spiral
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Floor lamp
INSPIRATION: My first goal is to design a simple and interesting lamp. So in the first place I set up a rule for myself before I started sketching: I can only use one single line to demonstrate the main body of the lamp. So as one might see, my lamp can be crafted out of one piece of metal. There are no redundant parts attached to the design. It is clean and simple and looks interesting in terms of the relations between space and shape even only triangle and circle(spiral) are involved in the design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a lamp of simplicity and abstraction. When looking at the base, one would have an illusion that it looks so "two dimensional", that it is not even a real object that can be touched and even hold its upper part. But truth is that, since it is made out of triangle shape, the most stable geometry, the base can serve as a solid foot for the whole body. The most interesting thing is that the shape of the base changes when looked from different angle. Simple but not simple.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design is a functional floor lamp that can be placed in a modern residence. It is more like a conceptual and sculptural piece rather than pure functional furniture.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2015 in Champaign, United States and finished in February 2016 in Champaign.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: From the beginning of the design, I'v been struggling with the cord. I think cord would become burdens of the lamp and disharmony of the design since the main body of the lamp should be one single piece of material(metal), and the plastic cord would become an unnecessary element, and even an awkward part of the design. So finally I decided to remove the cord, by replacing rechargeable LED light, to keep the whole design clean and simple.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part is to design the triangle base. I had to keep following my original design but at the same time, by consulting my friend in Engineering, made sure the base is solid enough to hold the upper part. Thus, even though it looks like the base is only constructed by one single tube bent in different angle, I had to consider the length, thickness and bending angle of the tube.
