| DESIGN NAME: Float PRIMARY FUNCTION: Collaborative Furniture INSPIRATION: FLOAT is the first in a collection of products designed by Perch Dynamic Solutions for Thomas Montgomery Ltd. Through collaboration the two companies share a desire to partner Irish based design with Irish based manufacturing to develop products which are internationally focused and highlight their focus on developing truly modern thought provoking solutions for workers of the 21st Century UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Float enriches the workspace environment by improving interpersonal space and enhancing meaningful interactions. As a truly flexible solution Float is designed to improve dynamic short term workflow. Research identified a need to design for natural group sizes and applied body spaces during social engagement or introversion. Float is a modular soft seating collection addressing the softer human needs in the Third Space while away from traditional workstations OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Float is a modular seating system which enables users to come together in more natural forming group numbers collaborate and interact. With its rotating seat and soft upholstered surfaces users can dictate how they can interact with people around them. Owing to its lightweight construction and utilising rotating castors the product can easily be repositioned at a moments notice by those interacting with it. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in June 2014 in Dublin Ireland and finished in May 2015. Float was exhibited as part of ID2015 Liminal Irish Design at the Threshold Exhibition at Milan Design Week (April 2015), New York Design Week (May 2015) and Dublin Event (Nov 2015) Float was also exhibited at 100% Design London (Sept 2015) FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Perch worked in collaboration with Thomas Montgomery Ltd. Knowing their inhouse capabilities as an upholstery manufacturer highlighted the company wide enthusiasm light hearted and considered approach to furniture and work solutions. They created an impossibly light novel and multi-functional HERO product which forms the DNA for a wide range of accompanying products in the family. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Modular Soft Seating System Moulded beech laminate back and arm support Dome topped PU foam swivel seat mounted on canting powder coated tubular steel frame. Hand crafted upholstery with combustion modified high resilient foam Wide choice of contract fabrics available Width: 1065mm Depth: 690mm Height: 770mm TAGS: float, softseating, collaborative seating, modular soft seating, concepts of urbanism RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The concept is inspired by our initial research into the postures assumed by small groups of workers and those working individually. We were struck by how inappropriate solutions caused awkward interactions and how ill conceived tables forced dangerous and dissatisfying solutions. Perch developed a truly modular and flexible solution for workers which acknowledges the need for adaptable ergonomics during Away from the Desk activities. FLOATs light aesthetic is guided primarily by the spatial requirements of the dynamic human form. CHALLENGE: The challenge was to identify and create an exciting solution for breakout and soft seating products within the working environment.
