DESIGN NAME: Helios
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Eye-wear
INSPIRATION: The name of the eye-wear collection is inspired by Helios (Ancient Greek: 'Ηλιος), that was the God of Sun in Greek Mythology. The project is inspired from the need of the modern consumer to own more than one pair of glasses.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Helios is an eye-wear collection which combines six different glasses-shapes in one frame by using magnet, in order to provide the user with the opportunity to own more than one pair of glasses in one frame minimizing the cost. The product is splitted in two main parts: (a) the main and (b) the spectacles frame.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Helios is divided in two parts, (a) the spectacles and (b) the main frame. In each part there is a magnet that attracts the other magnet, so the user can easily change shapes of spectacles frames. Therefore, Helios is an innovative project that provides a new way of interaction with the eye-wear.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September in Athens (Greece) and finished in February in Athens (Greece).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project investigates the problematic area and the user requirements, in order to detail design an optical system of lenses and frame. In particular, the research is done on the eye-wear (optical glasses and sunglasses) and the role that it has in modern society. This essay includes a brief survey on how the market trends are formed, both in optical and sunglasses. The research continues exploring the user wants and needs by creating a survey with questionnaires and interviews. Afterwards, the eye diseases are studied and an extensive research over materials is done for both frames and lenses. Thus, given the above extensive research, the design guidelines are clarified and the project is concluded with the detailed design of the eye-wear.
CHALLENGE: The challenge of the project was the connection between the frame and the lenses.
