DESIGN NAME: EDGE Chair
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: I wanted to design a chair which would be simple and its design will mirror the construction. I was deeply inspired in origami.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The EDGE is simply the most comfortable aluminium chair ever designed and built. It is durable, stackable, and all in an iconic design.
This stackable aluminium chair is based on a minimalist design concept which aspires to optimum ergonomics. The Edge chair is made of 3 mm thick aluminium, which is moulded to the required shape and robotically welded. The aluminium chair comes in a variety of fashionable colours.
From the very start, we aim for simplicity, but simplicity can never be created simply. The EDGE is
a result of comprehensive analysis, studying seating habits and the feedback from user experience, followed by a process of refinement which lasted over a year. The form is inspired by Japanese origami where every surface has its purpose and where a clever composition of surfaces forms a perfectly balanced and functional whole.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In interior also in exterior
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2011 and finished in 2012, and was exhibited in ICFF New York.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Several technologies are used during the production. A 3mm aluminium plate is first cut by laser, then bent according to the drawing, welded, and the surface
is finished with powder coating. The final product is tough and durable, but also stackable and light enough to be easily manipulated. The chair has been subjected to the toughest stress tests and before shipment every piece is rigorously checked to make sure that it satisfies our own exacting uality expectations.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 650 mm x 550 mm x 850 mm, weight: 6,1 kg, variety of fashionable colours
TAGS: Stackable, lightweight, long lifetime
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Solution was found on paper models in scale. Then we tested on prototypes from aluminium. We made 20 prototypes which was used to optimisation the maximum load. The final product was tested in furniture lab and it fulfils all the norms for public sitting.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to make a chair as lightweight as possible and combine all the planes under the same angles.
