| DESIGN NAME: Shard PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mood Table INSPIRATION: My idea in the first place was to try to make table that is changeable, or with two parts to be possible to assemble two diferent tables. Actually, the first steps of the design came spontaneously when I played with a visit card in my hands and first folded it diagonally and the outline of the main table appeared. After that I cut this diagonal and continuing to play with this two triangles, then I saw the shape of the second table. After some sketches and 3d modeling I made the prototype. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This table is composited by two identical triangular parts, which get into each other. The table can be coffee or bar type /low or tall/, depending on the way you assemble it. The dynamic shape of this product makes interesting triangular forms, which are perfect to keep any magazines or books. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table is useful for public spaces, cafes or bars. It can easy change the atmosphere of the interior, depending of the event: you can fast transform the table from coffee to bar type. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: First sketches with the project are from more than a year ago. I develop the design in Sofia, Bulgaria. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The tricky part while I produced the prototype was to find the exact shape and right angles for the two parts, because they must to match perfectly. Also dimensions of the table had to meet some requirements. The height of the coffee table had to be around 45 cm. These of the bar type table had to be around 90 cm. The width of all details had to be 50 cm. My prototype is made from solid oak wood, because the oak is one of the local wood materials here in Bulgaria. But the table can be made of any material that can be cut in this shape - mdf, corian, etc. This product is in its prototype stage. So in the moment I’m continuing to develop the design in direction of easy and stable way of assembling and disassembling the details and fit them into a transport package. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of the coffee (low) type table are 1020mm x 680mm x 440mm. These of bar type are 500mm x 630mm x 900mm. The thickness of the material that I use is 30 mm. The table is composite by two parts that can be disassembled on 6 pieces. All of them are 500mm width. The biggest two are 1000mm long. You can pack all parts in package with dimensions 1060mm x 540mm x 200mm TAGS: mood table, shard, futuristic design, geometric table, dynamic shape RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I didn’t do any big research about the invention of this design. Of course, I had an idea what I wanted to do. I wanted to design changeable table. A one that will be useful for public spaces as cafes and bars, and in same time to be able fast and easy to change the atmosphere of the interior. I wanted this product to be clean, futuristic, geometric, strong and sharp. Wanted to escape from the round forms. The research for this design is my experience through the years as designer. CHALLENGE: It took me a lot of time to find the right shape for the two parts. After the first sketches of the idea I started to develop it in 3D program and made a real little models of the table. I repeated this action over and over again till I found the right shape (because the both parts are identical, same shape) with that makes the parts to fit perfectly for the two tables and to fit and stay together without any joints for the coffee table. Now I develop a secret tool (invisible joint) to assemble and disassemble fast and easy the bar type table.
