DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Euclid

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table

INSPIRATION:
Inspiration for Euclid stems from the Japanese design traditions: great attention to subtlety and detail. Design of Euclid is mostly influenced by the key principle of Japanese design of primarily highlighting the beauty of the material itself without explicitly pronouncing consciousness of the creator.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Euclid is a unique attempt to extend the horizons of pure solutions and move away from the extravagant furniture design. It achieves undisturbed simplicity which is the highest level of complexity. Euclid is distinguishable by its flawless integration and embodiment of three basic geometric shapes granting a tribute to the philosophy of geometry. It is also a reincarnation of minimalist design: schematic, impersonal and repetitive of elementary structures.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Euclid is a neutral and accessible table which allows appreciation of simplicity and pure forms, and is not too demanding for the particular style of interior. It is warm to the touch due to the natural oak wood used for Euclid’s production.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
From the first sketches of the Euclid design to the final production of the table less than a year passed by. The project commenced in May 2015, and first prototype was manufactured in December 2015.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The body and legs of the table are made out of natural oak wood. Table top is handpicked and glued oak timber, while table legs are manufactured from solid oak wood. High precision CNC technology is used to cut table legs into geometric shapes to perfectly fit the designated cutaway spaces in the tabletop. Fine sanding and staining is used to complete the design of Euclid.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Tabletop diameter – 1000 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm, height – 750 mm, tabletop brim height – 20 mm.

TAGS:
geometry, simplicity, natural wood, round table, minimalism, dining table, work table, three-legged table

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Designer researched extensively Japanese design traditions (principles and materials) and philosophy of geometry, especially the theories of Euclid. This led to the dwelling on the basic geometric shapes - square, circle and triangle - and their inclusion into final composition of the table. Decision to produce the table from natural oak wood is informed by Japanese philosophy of design in harmony with the nature.

CHALLENGE:
Designer attempted to come up with a minimalist table that would convey a certain philosophy while at the same time avoiding excessiveness of details. The search for the exact proportions resulted in many prototypes which were also useful for the lessons in the precision of wood cutting.
