DESIGN NAME: Visual/Senses
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Editorial Design
INSPIRATION: The main part of the project is an exhibition: Visual/Senses. While the actual exhibition is to deliver a blast of nostalgia and familiarity, and a shot of discovery for the younger visitors. The objective of this catalogue is to engage readers through the senses of visual and smell so that memories are evoked; new possibilities are imagined and personal connections are explored. The inspiration is functional as to achieve the aim of the exhibition to recreate the ambience of visiting a temple.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This exhibition catalogue is a unique publication that printed with specially created aroma ink. Working with a scent company, Jay Cee Global, the aim is to create a scent that smell like a temple which tightly related to the exhibition theme. The whole process took about five months to complete after experimenting with various natural fragrance materials. Then the essence of the scent was sent to the printer and mixed into the printing inks to print the catalogue.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This catalogue has two functions: as an exhibition catalogue and later as a photo-book when needed. It is designed with traditional sewing so that the first page can be added in if there is an exhibition, and the sleeve can serves as exhibition posters. The photographs are printed on Morgen paper for a soft and gentleness feel, the back of the pages is printed with pantone colors to separate the different temple.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2012 and finished in May 2014 in Singapore.
The book was double up as a catalogue in the Visual/Senses exhibition of Jesvin Yeo in Red Top Gallery at 789 Art District in Beijing China on May 2014.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The challenging part was to find a printer to allow the mixing of the aroma essence into the printing ink, as the concern was the residing of smell on the machine after the printing. Fortunately, we managed to persuade a printer to experiment with the job.
Besides the aroma printing ink, 3D Embossing was used to create the smoke effect on the cover. The aim was to create a sculpted effect with a different levels impression. Standard embossing has only one level of impression.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 155mm (w) x 220mm (h) x 20mm (thickness)
TAGS: Cultural Images, Symbol, Heritage, Chinese Temple, Architectural Decoration
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: How many times the decorative elements of traditional Chinese temples are being unnoticed? Employing visual research, the forgotten, the ordinary and the archaic are given stature. Paradoxically they become the focal point once again. The aim of the project is to invite readers to take a second look at the overlooked and to participate in a dialogue of cultural exchange. The design output has captured the characteristics of Chinese cultures and share them with the world.
CHALLENGE: 1. Capturing of the best angles of the cultural elements can be challenging because we were not allowed to set-up any equipment.
2. Applying for written permission to reproduce the images for the three featured historic temples is complicated and time consuming, it has taken us nearly a year to complete the process.
3. As mentioned before, finding a printer to add aroma essence to the printing ink is hard, we have approached 8 printers from Singapore to Malaysia to China.

Visual/Senses is an incredible work of design that is worthy of the A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award. This work is truly unique, as it uses the special technique of printing with aroma ink in order to create a scent that resembles a temple, which is closely connected to the exhibition theme. The process of creating this scent took five months of experimentation with various natural fragrances, and the result is truly captivating. The research behind the project has captured the characteristics of Chinese cultures and shared them with the world, while inviting readers to take a second look at the overlooked. Furthermore, the challenges of capturing the best angles of the cultural elements and the process of getting written permission to reproduce the images of three featured historic temples was complicated and time consuming, but ultimately successful. Finally, the 3D Embossing used to create the smoke effect on the cover is simply stunning and creates a sculpted effect with different levels of impression. This innovative work is a true example of excellence in design.
