DESIGN NAME: Easy Light
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: The inspiration started as an experimental research to try to push to the limit the values of lightness and strength in a single object, that could be at the same time light, durable and visually pleasant.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Easy Light Chair is a minimum material consuming chair that can easily be CNC manufactured, made from okume plywood, chosen for its marble-like veins texture creating a natural decoration on the object.Every component of the chair is designed to be as light as possible, cutting out all the unnecessary material, saving production time. The result is a visually light object where all the structural elements are reduced to the bones. The chair sitting top was designed to give it a float-like appearance emphasizing the sensation of lightness.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: At the first glance the easy light chair might look too ethereal and light, but when the users seats on it immediately fells its constructive solidity and stiffness and start using it as a normal chair. The A shaped legs where designed to allow the chair to be stacked on each other in order to save space both in home when don't needed and as well as during transportation.
The final touch of natural wax will give to the user a silk-like sensation when touching the chair.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first idea started in 2010 during a visit at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, but remained just a note on my diary until 2013 when, founded it again, I started making the first sketches. Early prototypes where made in Milan on January 2014 and the definitive one was eventually realized during May 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design uses Okume plywood in three different thicknesses for the seats, the legs and the longitudinal spar. That is due to the fact that each component has to bear different forces when a person is seated over the chair. This has allowed to took weight in part of the structure where wasn't needed and to shift it in other that need it the most.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: stool dimensions is Height 460mm Width 440mm x Depth x 440mm Certified plantation Okume wood

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project started as an exploration on up to what one could push in terms of material removal without compromising solidity. Less material also means less consumption throughout all the supply chain: from raw materials, to production and transportation, with significant benefits also for the environmental. Starting point of the research was all the Italian modernist furniture and architecture with a contamination of the minimal and essential shapes of Japanese furniture.
CHALLENGE: Different thickness of the plywood where experimented to find the perfect ratio of thickness and stability for each component. The idea was also that to keep the number of pieces of the chair low in order to make it more easy to built and construct for the manufacturer.
Also different essence of wood where tried, to give to the object a natural decoration without adding anything artificial.
