DESIGN NAME: MESO® QuickPlex SQ 120
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multiplex Imager
INSPIRATION: The team was inspired by the desire to infuse natural elements into the laboratory setting. Typical laboratory instruments are designed only for functionality and tend to be inelegant, bulky and unappealing. By contrast, this instrument incorporates nature-inspired lines and colors . The light in the central tower pulses when the machine is running as if it were alive. The end result is a visual flow that remains unbroken from any angle, while hiding the industrial components inside.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The MESO® QuickPlex SQ 120 instrument represents an ideal marriage between form and function for a laboratory research instrument. It enables rapid analysis of biological samples, while its innovative design facilitates easy access to internal components and its slim profile minimizes its footprint on the laboratory bench. The result is an elegant and aesthetically pleasing instrument in a market dominated by boxy, drab machines.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The SQ 120 instrument facilitates biomedical research by measuring proteins in biological samples with speed, accuracy, and a broad dynamic range. The instrument enables the measurement of multiple proteins in a single sample saving time, cost, and sample volume. Unlike other instruments in the protein measurement field, the simple design and workflow of the SQ 120 allows reproducible and reliable measurements without the need for maintenance and between-read cleaning.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design efforts spanned several years primarily at our facilities in Maryland. The instrument was launched globally in August 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The vital internal components have physical restrictions that require the conjunction of a large horizontal stage and high performance camera that must be at a right angle to the stage. The entire internal system must remain light-impermeable, while allowing for the introduction and ejection of research materials during operation. The design incorporates an easily removable tray hidden in the design that allows easy access to the internal mechanism.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Design began with a review of critical elements: a light-impermeable core, a camera in the central tower, and relatability to the existing instrument portfolio. An iterative internal review process was used to arrive at the final design. This collaborative effort involved designers, product developers, mechanical engineers, and members of the executive team. As the process unfolded, the central tower and reverse curvature were an integral part of the design and drove further design decisions.
CHALLENGE: Several months were spent on an iterative process to capture the subtle details in the curvature to ensure that there are no incongruities visible to the eye. This also ensured that the instrument would be visually appealing from all angles.
