DESIGN NAME: MoodWear
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Mood Changing Clothing
INSPIRATION: The design is in research based interdisciplinary field. Much of the research effort in this interface has been concerned with bringing electronic power and information technologies closer to the world of our daily life and tasks. Aim at creating garments for incorporation of wearable technology based on the interaction of design and technology, we intend to investigate optimum design to achieve best performance.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The tailor-made clothing prototypes consist of an outer garment and an inner garment suit for a lady and a man. These clothing systems have high levels of functionality and intelligence. Both undergarments change colour via voice stimulation by the mood of the wearer, self-powered and charged by the sun through the use of PV technology.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The established SMART suits with high aesthetics constitute the SMART clothing system. Design and technology integration underpins the newly made collection of SMART clothing design, capable of energy harvesting and mood changing. Simply plug in your mobile devices in the pockets and enjoy the sun in the day. Switch on the undergarment to regulate your mood with lighting colours in the dark or at night. The flexible and miniaturised electronic components with modular design make the suits comfortable, washable, durable and easy to use.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The research has taken 5 years at Heriot Watt University in the UK. The final collection with the expected functions was published in June 2012.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The innovative fibre optic fabric and garment design, with wearable electronic, computational and responsive information technologies have been realised by using textile based conductive strips of fabric and snap on/off fasteners. Optimisation of the LEDs, the battery and their effective connection with the wearable PCB has been realised. Voice detection, processing and colour illumination of the LEDs as colour inputs to the fibre optic garment have been investigated, tested and integrated successfully into the clothing system.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Two SMART clothing suits consisting of an undergarment and an overcoat, one for female size of UK 12, and another for male size of UK 40.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This work has realised the concept of how a photonic, highly fashionable garment, can respond to the mood of the wearer, entirely powered by a solar system and by careful fusing technology in the design of the garment. The harvested solar power is stored and it is also useful for bespoke charging of mobile devices. The use of textile based conductive materials and special fasteners together with conventional textiles and their blending with wearable technologies, made this SMART garment collection a couture piece and has proved that how technologists and designers can work together.
CHALLENGE: Fibre optics and LEDs have previously been applied for illuminating applications on clothing. But their colour dynamic change according to the physiological and psychological state of human in real time has never been considered before and it is original. This project has developed a responsive illuminating fibre optic fabric system with colour changing output by responding to a sound stimulus via wearable electronic control integrated in the garment and hence developing an intimate communication between human and clothing.
