DESIGN NAME: Form Equaliser
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Transformable Speaker
INSPIRATION: There are more than 1,000 bat species in the world and their habitat and prey vary depending on the species as well. Due to the difference of sensory tasks required for the environment and food, each species has evolved distinctive ears and nose shape. From the research, it was driven that sound pertains to shape. My concept was derived from this principle that shape can influence sound.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As a result of biomimetic study originally inspired by echolocation mechanism of bat, this transformable speaker allows a user to adjust sound by altering the shape of it. Each of 8000 small module is connected with rubber at the end, sustaining balance and providing flexibility of movement. Simply by pulling or pushing one or some part, shape and the tune of the speaker can be changed. This is targeted to sophisticated listeners who loves to adjust details of sound.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The way the speaker works is simple. A user can use the speaker in an ordinary way except that he or she can control the tune by transforming shape. The small piece is rectangle with a rectangular hole. Each moves on a circle rod, a spring look like inner structure through the hole. Rubber attached at the end of piece protects it from falling out while gives flexibility of movement.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2014 and ended in September.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This speaker is consisted of six parts; Inner structure, 8000 small pieces which determines form and sound, rubber holder that sustains the balance of the whole structure, bottom body with circuit inside and upper lid. Two materials; wood and plastic are considered as the materials for small modules and upper lid. Inner structure is steel, and bottom body is plastic.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project started from dissertation project that I completed through my Masters degree. This biomimetic design project applies bottom-up methods with the goal of identifying the optimum auditory device design. Through this study, extensive amount of research of sensory mechanism gave me insights, one of which was about correlation between sound and form. To prove this, a prototype was made and it was experimented with software called LabView and Matlab code program in an anechoic chamber.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of this project was to prove that this concept is feasible. Though the proposition that sound can be varied by form was intriguing, realising the idea was requiring beyond my capability. Since I was not specialised in auditory devices and sound physics, I got many helps from my colleagues and supervisors.
