PRIMARY FUNCTION: Restaurant
INSPIRATION: Aiming to bringing an essence of Singapore, the design was inspired by orchid, national flower of Singapore, which has also been celebrated for its beauty and is a symbol of nobility and refinement in Chinese culture. A blend of modern furnishings such as bronze metal plate, contemporary chandelier, and traditional elements such as Chinese pattern is truly one of a kind.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design of the new Jumbo Seafood restaurant in Shanghai, China, is a fresh interpretation of luxurious modern dining experience in a Chinese restaurant. The 5400 square feet restaurant can accommodate 114 guests in the general dining area and 62 in their seven VIP rooms.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Before entering the main dining area, visitors are led thru a dim corridor displaying artworks and wine selections. The idea was to provoke a sense of curiosity and build an element of surprise once they reach the main dining area which in contrary is much brighter with natural lights, open, and spacious. Different kinds of seating arrangements and settings gives the visitors more choices and breaks the monotony. To ensure flexibility, the VIP rooms feature collapsible dividers that allow them to house both small and big parties.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design incorporates natural materials such as light travertine for the walls, nero marquina marble, and natural stone. Another hard material, bronze metal plate, was used to form the corridor feature light, custom chandelier, and wall cladding. Blending various soft furnishings such as custom carpet flooring, printed fabric wall, and curtain was necessary to soften up the whole atmosphere. Organic shapes reflected on the floor and ceiling helps create a more welcoming environment.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: During planning, one of the challenge was how to bring as much natural lights in to both main dining area and all the VIP rooms. In result, the VIP rooms located along the windows were designed with glass panels instead of partition walls.
Another challenge during the construction stage was how to ensure perfection while working with the metal plate to create the corridor organic shaped light which is one of the most important design feature. Precision and excellent workmanship was crucial to achieve the desired curvature.
