DESIGN NAME: Nordic Sky
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting
INSPIRATION: Our Christmas tree has gotten smaller each year, and so far there has not been a modern plastic tree available on the market. The inspiration for this design came from the snowy white trees of Lapland in winter, and the stars in the Nordic night sky.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For this project, the intention was to design a lighting product for both domestic and public use. Nordic Sky is a light tree that casts a star-shaped spot of light upwards, while spreading soft light around. Several trees can be used to create a starry sky or a constellation to a space. The tree can be made easily movable by installing wheels under it if needed. The product is possible to make in different sizes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Depending on the space and how the product is located in a room, the light creates a special atmosphere. The color or texture of the ceiling changes the look of the star spotlight. Placing several lights in a public area turns the space to a forest with a starry sky. When all trees are lit up, it is a unique experience. Other lights are not necessarily needed.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea started about four years ago, and has been developing since then to the final product.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product is made of a piece of opal plastic, folded into the shape of a star. The LED light inside of the plastic base casts a star-shaped spotlight from the opening at the top.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 940 mm x 940 mm x 1100 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The biggest challenge was dimensioning the whole structure in order to create the perfect size and shape for the spotlight.
CHALLENGE: This design has a three parts main product, nothing (space between a main product and a ceiling) and a star in a "sky" Empty space was difficult . how high is this emptiness has a important role in atmosphere.
