DESIGN NAME: Ubiquitous Stand
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desktop Interactive Display Stand
INSPIRATION: The spatial structure of Ubiquitous Stand came from the scene of skyscrapers of a local city. The windows and structure members have created a solid-void grid pattern. The intrigued 3D grid frames of the stand mimic the complexity of urban fabrics. The final configuration presents different layers and orientations of openings that open up to any prospects.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This ubiquitous desktop stand is designed to interact people with day dreams. The holes are arranged and additively augmented with flowers, lollipops, or subjects that assimilate into its pattern from various orientations. The chromed surface reflects and changes tones to the displayed subjects and the people interact with it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: An “active” way of interacting with this stand is to add “meanings” to the grid pattern with something meaningful to the end user like small daisy or four-leaved clover. A “passive” way of interacting with is to erect the stand on different sides and to enjoy how the reflection changes by following your viewpoint.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The original base shape was created about two years ago. The design process continued to 2015 with the study of the metaphor and surface attributes. After went through a whole series of algorithmic tests, this Ubiquitous Stand is final outcome. It was created in Taipei, Taiwan

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The layers of frames and openings are grown from a simple base 3D shape. Under the control of magnitude, the final shape and size is adjusted to the proportion suitable for prospective views from different angles. Thanks for the current rapid-prototyping (RP) FDM technology, the based object is made of ABS. The finishing is coated by an innovative “spray electroplating” method, which mixes two chemicals in the air to create the touch of chrome.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research has twofold: the metaphor and the execution of the metaphor. As explained ahead, I took the metaphor of the skyscrapers in a city and tried to recreate it on desktop under different levels of abstraction. Skyscrapers have been used as background in movies or sightseeing pictures. I want to change the role it plays by departing from traditional orthogonal pattern into a new dimension of organization.
CHALLENGE: I do not want to create a design just as complicate as it looks. The design has to trigger people’s curiosity for the originality of the form. So the most difficult part is how to create the algorithmic configuration based on something original and was shared by skyscrapers. I ended up with a basic slightly deformed 3D rectangular with different levels of extrusion on each face. The final shape went through second deformation, so on one face people can see the growing complexity and on the other face people can see the sharp edge of deformed volume.
