| DESIGN NAME: Music Chair Sculpture PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: Stan's wife teaches beginning piano lessons. For Christmas she asked for a Music Chair. In response to her request and inspired by the music that fills their home, Stan constructed this music chair to fill a need, and provide a point of visual interest. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design is an attempt to celebrate the flow, dimension, and dynamics of music. The music chair is comprised of three main elements, the back, the legs, and the seat. The design plays with the idea of musical movement, or visual tone and volume. Together the elements are designed to flow together imitating music's rich and stirring movement in space and perception. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Early in the design It was important to limit the design to a minimal number of elements. A simple cylindrical shape was employed to join the legs together and to provide a simple attachment point for the seat. This arrangement is designed to give the Music Chair a sense of suspended freedom. The Music Chair is imagined to provide a unique fluid expression of motion that can be sensed while seated. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started on December 14, 2015 and was finished almost two weeks later, very early Christmas morning 2015. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Music Chair is made of steel, chosen because of its raw strength and beauty. The legs and back of the chair are constructed using a strong, yet lightweight steel box-frame construction technique, intentionally constructed using a minimal number of elements as a key design feature. In future versions, the treble and bass clef elements can be fabricated using exotic woods, laminates, and/or composites. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 432 mm x 560 mm x 1320 mm (17 in x 22 in x 52 in) TAGS: Chair, Music Chair, Treble Clef, Bass Clef, Furniture, Music Furniture, Sculpture, Accent, Accent Chair, Accent Furniture, Metal, Metal Chair, Metal Music Chair, Steel, Steel Chair, Steel Music Chair RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research for this project involved the selection of simple images of both the treble and bass clefs and listening to beautiful and inspiring music. A quick look on the internet provided very little in the way of inspirational direction. A rough sketch was created and work began. The sketch and images were used as a general guideline throughout design and construction process. CHALLENGE: By far the most difficult and time consuming aspect of building the Music Chair was making the steel box-frame legs and back. This process involves cutting two sides and then carefully welding on the curving edge. After the shape is welded together, a small amount of automotive body filler is used to smooth and fill the pits and voids. NAME: E3 PROFILE: The Client is Stan's wife. The Studio is Stan's garage. For this project a Mr. Sandström's has elected to use his personal Brand, or moniker. The E3 brand represents Stan's personal life adage to Enlighten, Encourage, and Empower through example and service. The Client for this project is Stan's wife. And the Studio is his garage. Stan is eager to license his designs so that others may have the opportunity to enjoy them as well. |
