| DESIGN NAME: Topology PRIMARY FUNCTION: Illustration INSPIRATION: Topology was inspired by the various travels that the artist, Huang Zi has taken. When we travel to other places, we open our eyes to the every detail that takes place in these various landscapes. We explore and discover new worlds where people has made their homes. The series is a collection of these landscapes in faraway places. A diary of sorts that help us make sense of where we are, and who we have met in our many journeys. This is the challenge that Huang Zi has taken up upon himself. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Because on every inch of every terrain, there is life. Places that we would love to go to, places that can only exist in our imaginations. Places that we call home. Topology is an ongoing series of black & white hand sketches that explores the imaginative topography of various landscapes and our relationships with them. The project aims to establish an ever going expansion of artworks in an online gallery format. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The online gallery format takes on a full screen approach by giving prominence to the sketches themselves. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in April 2013 and is still ongoing. Most of the work are now for public display on the artist's Facebook and Youtube accounts. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The sketches were compiled from the diaries and sketchbooks of the artist and digitally converted for an online gallery display format. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 800mm X Height 300mm TAGS: Illustration, art direction, digital, visual, communications, graphics, artist, sketching, drawing RESEARCH ABSTRACT: How do we get good vantage views of the locations that inspire our imagination and yet ground us in reality? The artist employed methods like positioning himself at the top of tall buildings overlooking the vast landscape below. He will then sketch on the spot if time permits. The method of observing and getting immersed in the surroundings helped unlock new possibilities for how the sketches can turn out. It isn't just about sketching what one sees but to go deeper into what might be causing the scene. For example, a road could be congested only because there is an overturned lorry further down the street. CHALLENGE: The artwork in Topology may be a reference to real or imagined landscapes. For example, artists may contribute sketches of a streetscape of their actual neighbourhoods. Other times, they can reimagine these neighbourhoods in abstract form. NAME: Leong Huang Zi PROFILE: Huang Zi absolutely loves translating brands into spaces that engages and interacts with the audience. Trained as an industrial designer, Huang Zi has worked on various projects ranging from retail design, events, products as well as branching into the digital spectrum. From founding his own design firm in Malaysia and later on moving over to IDEO Singapore where he works today, Huang Zi readily takes on all major components of a project - from the initial idea to the communications and on to the final build up. An aspiring artist, he curates a series when he sketches a diary of his various travels. The goal is to capture the world on a piece of paper with just a pen and no photos. Launched since 2013, the series has so far garnered quite a following and is expanding. |
