DESIGN NAME: Tree of Life
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring
INSPIRATION: 'Tree of Life' has been a sacred symbol of 'circle of life' and 'vitality of life' since ancient times. The enlightenment through trees inspired this ring collection. 'Circle of life' 'vitality of life' and 'enlightenment of life' gained through the 'eye of wisdom' were instilled in my works. And trees have been the motif of my works from the past.I hope this project can create a new value that a ring can be wearable and practical as well as artistic. With this project I hope jewelry can be appreciated as a field of Craft Art.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project inspired by the nature focuses more on the design intention rather than the design itself. The base of this ring lies on the abstract and implicative values of trees rather than their physical shapes. Naturally flowing curves across the series of this project indicates perpetuity of life and the harmonious combination of constantly repeated life and the spiral branches and sinuous forms and curves surrounding the gemstones imply the vitality of life and hope.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The story in my project is as important as the function as a ring. This ring was created in the hope of breaking the stereotype that artistic jewelry is non-wearable or uncomfortable. Instead I intended to create a ring with values of scarcity and practicality as well as artistry. On top of that, I also hope people who wear this ring truly appreciate the story in it so that it would not be affected by the change of trend in the passage of time. Like constantly repeated life of human being, I hope my ring can be loved beyond ages and I hope my ring can transcend time and space forever.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This is an ongoing project since April 2014. To complete one ring, it takes for about one month.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: ‘Tree of Life’ is a handcrafted jeweled ring. I adopted wax carving method to formulate free curved lines. I used soft wax instead of general hard wax. I heated spatula using an alcohol lamp, adjusted temperature according to the room temperature and shaped wax. Band of the ring represents the infinite vitality as two embracing trees roll up together and bear fruits toward the sky. I adopted prong setting to mount main gemstones and only used curved lines to reify the energy of life. A pave set of diamonds represents the ‘Eye of Wisdom’. The colored diamonds were handcrafted in gradation in color so that they can be shown in an abstraction.
‘Tree of Life’ in 14k gold (white, yellow, and pink) contains a main stone Amethyst 8.4CT with pink sapphires 0.2CT and Mellee Diamond 0.254CT/London Blue Topaz 4.6CT with Pearl 12mm, Mellee Diamond 0.299CT/Blue Star Sapphire 5.8CT with Pearl 12mm, Mellee Diamond 0.052CT, Mellee Sapphire 0.43CT/ Citrine 6.31CT with Peral 10mm, Mellee Sapphire 0.5CT. The beautiful combination of these brilliant gemstones maximizes the visual impact to portrait the design concept and the shape of the ring.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I believe that jewelry is no longer a mere means of expression of individuality to pursuit beauty. Now jewelry satisfies the artistic and emotional values of people. Through this project, I would like to examine how jewelry can gratify the psychological needs of people who acknowledge the artistic value of jewelry that are unique and rare in design.I would like to argue that jewelry is a part of culture and arts with its diverse functions and presentation methods beyond its typical representation as ornaments. Moreover, this project will reflect the psychological aspect modern customers who prefer the scarcity of customized jewelry of handcraft workshops to the uniformity of mass production jewelry. I hope, as a jewelry designer, this research can discuss the current market trend that jewelry is no longer mere expensive consumer goods. Rather I hope jewelry can be poised as a complete Metal Craft Art with the full support of the identity and convergence of design.
Additionally, I hope the future designers can expand their expression realm through their creative works. And finally, as a field of Metal Craft Art, I hope jewelry with the original and unique values added can remain forever as treasured possessions for everybody.
CHALLENGE: ‘Tree of Life’ is rather curvilinear without standardized pattern and thus requires meticulous attention to adjust the thickness of wax. However, I believe that the method that I applied is optimal to handcraft the desired design despite the long required time. In addition, finding the proper working temperature was challenging as well. At the low temperature, wax gets chipped off or broken. On the other hand at the high temperature, wax gets melted. I paid attention in particular to maintain optimal room and spatula temperature.
