DESIGN NAME: Luna
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart bedside projector
INSPIRATION: I tried to adress the issue of not sleeping enough by distracting people of the daily thoughts. This way, falling asleep should be easier. Also, Luna can help children fall asleep again, so the parents could sleep longer. To make the product interesting for a broad target group, I tried to make it look friendly enough for the babyroom, but serious enough for the master bedroom. Smart features should further enhance the multi functional experience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Research has shown that with a good night's sleep we reset our memory, reduce metabolic demand on the brain and stay alert. Luna helps you and your children fall asleep by projecting moving patterns on the ceiling, which can be chosen through the app. The camera doubles as a babyphone and a security camera. With voice control you can ask for the time or for your unread texts. Luna is a multifunctional product that makes life more healthy, fun and enjoyable!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Plug & play. Download the app, install different moving patterns and set the preferences. If a baby starts crying or moves around, luna will recognize it and immidiatly play the moving patterns. Kids can be entertained untill they fall asleep. You can check on the baby by accessing the front facing camera.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2015 and ended in Februari 2016 in Stuttgart, Germany.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: ABS injectionmolded body, Clear polycarbonate cover, Aluminium base.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 120 mm diameter, 180 mm height. A small Pico Projector is connected to a circuitboard with Low-Energy Wi-Fi. To cool the projector, the base is made of aluminium and has large surface area ribs. This way, no fan is needed, which could be annoying in the bedroom. A build in accu, 7200 mAh, makes it possible to use Luna without the power plug.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Certain colors are said to calm you down. With projecting patterns in these colors, a calming atmosphere can be created. With the right amount of sleep, you can stay more focussed during the day.
CHALLENGE: Trying to design a experience rather than only the product. The benefits of enough sleep are clear, the big challenge was how to incorporate functions to enhance the sleep or the falling asleep process.
