| DESIGN NAME: RiutBag R15 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Secure Laptop Backpack INSPIRATION: For years as a commuter I travelled alone between London and Berlin by train and plane. I was often concerned for the safety of my tech, passport and wallet. One day in the commuter crush, I wished my backpack were the other way round. I couldn't find this bag anywhere online. The idea wouldn't leave my mind. I sketched it out, saved up, left my job in March 2014 and crowdfunded my first production runs on Kickstarter. Now there are 4500 RiutBag users in the world travelling with peace of mind. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: RiutBag, pronounced "riot bag", is the backwards backpack for secure urban travel. RiutBag has revolved 180 degrees to place all access points safely against the user's back. Why? With a conventional backpack, the person behind us can access our belongings better than we can. That’s an unnerving design fault in our densely packed cities, bags packed full of tech. Now commuters and city travellers can travel anywhere with peace of mind. This revolution of the backpack allows us to adapt better to urban life. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: RiutBag is worn on both shoulders. It uses your back to intrinsically protect access. Fold away straps with "invisible strap lengths" via elastic attachment. In-built laptop compartment is well cushioned. Inner pockets store tech, cables and documents. 15 litre body opens suitcase style. Wallet, phone and passport sit in the top pocket. Zipped strap ticket pockets give access to tickets on the go. Outer bottle and umbrella holders give you quick access to these replaceable items. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All RiutBags are handmade at sewing machines by expert backpack stitchers. RiutBag main materials - Main body - 1000D waterproof black Cordura compounded with 1mm EVA Base - Thermoplastic polyurethane compounded with 2mm EVA Zips - YKK Laptop holder - 2mm Lycra Lining - waterproof nylon lining Pockets - mesh with YKK zips SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: RiutBag R15 - width 340mm x depth 150mm x height 470mm Weight - 1.2kg Capacity - 15 litres Laptop size - up to 15 inch TAGS: RiutBag, backpack, rucksack, work, commute, laptop, security, secure, design, comfort RESEARCH ABSTRACT: User-led design. Giblin was a backpack user with no background in design. To remove her bias, Giblin asked commuters on social media to take part in surveys about travel luggage. 1000 commuters took the survey. 1000 users backed the RiutBag on Kickstarter and tested it. They gave feedback. This data powered two new RiutBag models, RiutBag R10 and R15. Every year, Riut brings out a new RiutBag model powered by user thinking. CHALLENGE: Rapid urban change is the greatest challenge to backpack design. The challenge is to adapt the urban backpack to meet them. Changing reliance on technology, new devices and new forms of technology which will arrive. My challenge: to design for users in ever changing urban environments so we can adapt, feeling comfort and peace of mind in our megacities, urban metropolises and as we move beyond planet earth to become multi-planetary. NAME: Riut Limited PROFILE: Riut, pronounced "riot", stands for Revolution in user thinking. Riut was formed in 2014 by Sarah Giblin to create the RiutBag, the backwards backpack for secure urban travel. This one-person design startup, as the name suggests, revolves around its users. The RiutBag is designed to ensure users feel safe as they travel the world, that they can easily and securely use the RiutBag. Vitally, once they have used the RiutBag, they are free to give their feedback. This user thinking is then used to prototype the next generation of RiutBags. Therefore, this is a Revolution in user thinking at every point. Sarah Giblin, RiutBag creator, was originally a commuter and backpack user. She spotted a design fault with the conventional rucksack and came up with a more user-friendly design: the RiutBag. She believes users are best placed to spot problems with everyday objects and that they might just come up with better ideas than some of the biggest companies in the world. It's possible today with the help of social media and crowdfunding companies such as Kickstarter. Her disruptive yet positive design philosophy says we - users - can do this too. |
