DESIGN NAME: Vertical Furniture
PRIMARY FUNCTION: -
INSPIRATION: The motivation behind Vertical Furniture was to solve an everyday problem using clever design— to find space to store furniture in my own home when it’s not in use. My inspiration for the Vertical Furniture design was based on my 3 year old daughter's Jigsaw puzzle. In our pursuit of the manta "the luxury of less" Vertical Furniture was born.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Vertical furniture is an innovative furniture system that allows the user to assemble an item of furniture without the use of tools or fixings and then use it in an uncompromising way by the further installation of elastic O-ring tension band fittings. The individual components of each furniture piece may be stored away in a flat wall mounted panel after disassembly. All pieces in the vertical furniture range can be assembled and disassembled regularly and used in an uncompromising way.
The tension band fittings are circular in shape and are able to be stretched and then retain their original shape. The addition of these O-rings is what allows for uncompromising use of the furniture when assembled which is what differentiates this design from previous flat pack or knock-down type furniture. Uncompromising use meaning that unlike other similar systems, vertical furniture is as durable and usable as conventional furniture that has been both mechanically and chemically fixed together. This furniture concept creates more versatile floor space and utilizes unused floor space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This furniture system design is furniture that can be stored away on a flat vertical format when not in use. It is not only the vertical format of this furniture that what sets it apart from all other self-assembled furniture, but the key is that once the O-rings have been fitted it allows for uncompromised use of the furniture in that it can be used in the same manner as similar furniture that has been manufactured in a conventional manner. Other similar products require restricted use due to their instability and or simply not being able to pick them up off the ground. Vertical furniture is meant to be assembled and disassembled regularly and is meant to be wall mounted within its template when not in use.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The initial concept was sketched in the first half of 2015. We exhibited a prototype and won an award at Furnitex in Melbourne in July 2015. We exhibited in Shanghai and London in August / Sept 2015 at Furniture China and TENT London. The design was further developed to include O ring tension bands and now we have a completed product. The location of Falecki Furniture is in Sydney.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Initially the vertical furniture product will be fabricated out of 16mm BB Hoop Australian made plywood sheets that begin their lives as sustainable plantation timber. Each product will require three 2400mm x 1200mm sheets of ply. The furniture components will be cut out of Sheet A 16mm BB Hoop plywood with the intact waste material (called a “Template”) to be saved and used to cast the GFRC (High performance glass fibre reinforced concrete) version of the same furniture components for outdoor use (sold separately). This template / mould is re-useable. Next. The furniture components will again be cut out of sheet B to the same size less the diameter of the CNC machine router bit. This will allow the furniture components from sheet A to slide into the template of Sheet B. The components from Sheet B will be sold separately as flat pack furniture not intended for vertical display / storage. The components from Sheet A will be inserted into the voids of sheet B (the “template”) and a 7mm plywood backing will be attached (sheet C). This will form the vertical furniture product and will be sold and shipped as a 2400mm x 1200mm x 25mm thick product ready to be wall mounted and used when needed by the consumer. This same manufacturing process can be used for various other materials such as acrylic, laminated timber panels and other plastics. The furniture components are assembled by the user without the use of any tools. The furniture components come together by the use of through tenon joints, slot joints and then finally O rings.
Although the Vertical Furniture design incorporates clever friction fit joinery to allow for tool-less assembly, without the O-ring tension bands, the friction fitting of critical joints would loosen after repeated use as the material wears. The tension band fittings are circular in shape and are able to be stretched and then retain their original shape. The addition of these O-rings is what allows for uncompromising use of the furniture when assembled which is what differentiates this design from previous flat pack or knock-down type furniture. Uncompromising use meaning that unlike other similar systems, vertical furniture is as durable and usable as conventional furniture that has been both mechanically and chemically fixed together. The furniture designs and template combinations are only limited by the human imagination and the size of a standard sheet of plywood. The initial design of Vertical furniture includes a dining table and two bench seats.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Initially the vertical furniture product will be fabricated out of 16mm BB Hoop Australian made plywood sheets. Each product will require three 2400mm x 1200mm sheets of ply. The bench seat is 750mm x 1500mm. The two seater bench or coffee table is 455x x 1300mm. The stool is 300mm x 400mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: It’s a fact that houses are getting smaller. Higher density living means living spaces are becoming smaller. More apartments are being built. The recent trend of housing code laws changing with the accommodation of the granny flat construction speaks to a need for more versatile housing. The average block of land has reduced in the past 30 years. The population is increasing at a faster rate than housing can be built.
The move to smaller homes means embracing decreased living costs and a more sustainable way to live. A need has arisen to create more versatile spaces in which we live. This includes more versatile storage options and multifunction rooms.
All of the above points to the Vertical Furniture system being necessary. It is just one of many possible solutions to increase the useability of small spaces and to allow the population to think outside the conventional ways of using their space and to use their space in the best way possible. Vertical furniture offers a design solution that will easily increase the flexibility of small spaces. This is extremely marketable domestically and overseas where usable and versatile space is at a premium.
Vertical Furniture has been well thought out in terms of materials used, best production methods and all while keeping a 100% Australian made product.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge in coming up and executing the Vertical Furniture design has been the simple fact that I am not a furniture designer and basically a year ago I entered into a completely foreign world I knew nothing about. Every aspect from design, legalities around IP, exhibiting, manufacturing and commercialisation of a product has been a complete learning curve. I was a fish out of water. I had to hold down my full time job, run by bespoke renovations business and try to get my design from a drawing on paper to a reality. This has definitely been the biggest challenge.
