| DESIGN NAME: Positive Negative PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bar Counter INSPIRATION: Inspiration comes from the shape of ice and wine bottles, We often say form follows function, but in this design form is function. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design consists of one positive and one negative bar counters with a set of wine rack. The table top of the bar is made of cork material, and the base of the bar is made of metallic material into the crystal structures, there are three boxes around the bar to place the wine and ice, and the box also can be put forward. Wine rack is composed of three groups metal framework, form is function. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The bar counter is divided into two parts: table top and the base. The wines can be stored in the wine rack on the table top or put into the ice bucket around the base, people can take out wine bottles from bucket around the bar when they needed, it is much more convenient and does not occupy space. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2014 and finished in April 2015 in Zhengzhou of China, and was exhibited in Luoyang international exhibition center in April 2015. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This design use metal welding and carpenter technology in the process of manufacturing, just use two types of materials, cork and iron. Considering the environmental issues from different angles the application of both materials all belong to the sustainable design, cork as the table top not only has a better sense of touch, but also can be easily find new one to replaced after the damage. Iron as the main structure is very durable, long live is also in line with the low carbon lifestyle of modern society. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Bar Counter: Width 500mm x Height 920mm Wine Rack: Width 110mm x Height 410mm TAGS: Positive, Negative, Bar Counter, Wine Rack, Ice, Bottle, Form, Function RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This research based on the rethinking of the relationship between form and function, bar counter and wine rack just as carriers for the experiment. We often find the functionality of some products are not very obvious, that leads us feel confused for its real purpose. Or some of them to follow the form follows function, easily lead to the products not only lack of intuitive recognition, but also lack of aesthetic and reasonable interaction. As an exploratory research perspective, we can find out the form can also be the function. CHALLENGE: Actually there are two obstacles have to overcome in the design process: one is how to control the overall shape, another is the complexity of processing. One of the bar counter need to be welded by 42 triangular metal panel in addition to the basic linear framework, I used to consider the cost and the complexity, but I finally choose the durability as the main factor to support the whole design.
