DESIGN NAME: Mitosis
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ceiling lamp
INSPIRATION: It all started from designing a set of ceiling lamps that each lamp should be unique in the shape and also creates a feeling when located beside the others. The inspiration is from mitosis division to show a motion in this lamp set and reminds some actions are happening over your dining table. User can see the story of mitotic division in his dining room.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Mitosis is a ceiling light made by blown glass and created for friendly moments. The key fact is that each piece is a unique and unrepeatable object. I use geometric shapes which use the metamorphosis form to create sense of action and motion, specially over dinner table that people used to eat and receive energy for their body cells recreations.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: While each lamp is unique in it's shape, when they locate near each other the metamorphosis will happen and user perceives the story of lamp set. On the other hand each lamp can be used separately based on user's need.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2014 in Kish Island and finished in February 2016 in Tehran.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It is made by blown glass from recycled glass, however for mass production, injection molding is preferred. It's powered by thin LED lights. Each lamp is made of 2 sphere that are connect to each other and in each sphere of a lamp there is a thin LED light.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My research in this project was mainly on designing a ceiling lamp that has a story behind it. I asked myself why all the indoor ceiling lamp set in a room are always the same? The fear of change often lies in our high expectations and prevents us to try other forms in a set and add some fun to it.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of this project was to define the most suitable type of LED light for the lamps because there is a 15 mm hole on each sphere. We preferred a small hole to the bigger one on each sphere because of having less visual impact on the overall shapes. So a thin cylindrical LED light was chosen that is available in the market.
