DESIGN NAME: Scottie
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Heated chair
INSPIRATION: My inspiration for this chair is the result of being ill for a few days. I had serious muscle pains and longed for a chair to give me warmth to ease this pain.
After that I started investigating the possibilities to bend hollow steel pipes and started working on prototypes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Scottie is a chair based on the principle of the hot water bottle.
It can easily be attached to the radiator, hence the taps. Once attached, the chair will warm up. It is also possible to fill the chair by hand, on hot days, this might also be done with cold water.
Scottie therefore serves two purposes: sitting and relaxing your muscles and bones.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The chair interacts with its users by giving them warmth and relaxing their muscles.
It's up to the user to decide whereto use it: indoor, outdoor, permanently attached to the radiator or not.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2015 and finished in June 2015.
It was exhibited in Dutch Design Week October 2015 and will be exhibited at Salone del Mobilie in April 2016.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Scottie is made out of hollow steel tubes with a diameter of 10 mm for the seating and 16 mm for the sides.
The chair is bent by hand, welded together and powder coated.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: length 70 cm
width 57 cm
height 103 cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I started by investigating the technical details of radiators and how the circuit should run in order to avoid cold parts or air blocking the flow.
I did this by checking information on the internet and by talking to radiator specialists.
Further in the process I did trials with water flowing through it.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult thing was to bend the steel properly, as well as the welding of the tubes in order for the water to flow through in the required circuit.
Furthermore picking the right thickness of the tubes required some attention.
