DESIGN NAME: Mini Well
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Intraocular Lens
INSPIRATION: Well design has been inspired by some recent discoveries in optical science for which aberrations can improve progressive optical performance not compromising modern lifestyle of middle-aged people. Well design has been developed to benefit presbyopic patients with comfort and wellness of vision. Well design features have been though in order to produce enhanced visual outcome, to improve quality of life of implanted patients and to promote their social integration.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Well is an Intraocular Lens correcting presbyopia after cataract surgery.
Well design changes the pupil optical properties to get an efficient progressive visual performance.
Central and peripheral pupil sections are treated including a process of wavefront engineering based on induction of wavefront spherical aberrations.
Well design has turned the concept of aberrations from negative to positive.
Well medical purpose is of providing a natural wellness of vision as well as an accommodating natural crystalline lens.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Well design is a modern solution for presbyopic patients undergoing cataract surgery. Presbyopia is an age related problem with near vision. With traditional solution patients have to accept some compromises. Well design has been defined to give them a chance to avoid these disadvantage. Patients implanted with Well can read again, watch TV and PC, and use mobile without help of glasses. Their quality of life is improved since their visual outcomes are enhanced and their social integration is promoted.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project has been developed in 2 years in Sifi Medtech facilities (Lavianio, Catania)

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Well Intraocular Lens is made of hydrogel material. It is manufactured in a dry and glassy state through a process of Lathing and Cutting. Than it is hydrated and supplied in a sterile preloaded system for the Lens Injection. Package consists of a specific loading chamber where the intraocular lens is loaded and inserted into the specific injector to inject the lens into the eye.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Well intraocular lens has an optical Biconvex profile with a dioptric range between 30D and 0D.
It has an optic diameter of 6 mm, a total diameter of 10.75 mm and haptics angle of 5°.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Well design technology uses wavefront aberrations in a smart way. They, as rule negligible in the central pupil section of a human eye, are specifically applied in the central optical section to get some new very efficient visual performances. A distribution of wavefornt abberrations of opposite signs is induced in the central pupil section. Results is an efficient visual performance due to the extended depth of focus.
CHALLENGE: Well design research and definition has represented the commitment to the biomedical research in Italy. The advanced medical technology of Well design has been developed thanks to engineering knowledge and cooperation with reputable international partners. Well design development and managing has been done in compliance with the highest international standards. Modern and innovative manufacturing processes and special experience in mechanotronics optics and biomaterials have been needed.
