PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee cup
INSPIRATION: Being the quality of the coffee unquestionable, experts consider that a perfect espresso should not exceed 30ml. This has been, over the years, a difficult variable to control by the coffee brands, as each establishment will measure the espresso randomly. However, we know that espresso is losing its true essence and quality when its measure is not controlled. In order to solve this issue with an innovative added value, CUP & SAUCER has developed a new cup with an innovation in its interior design. This new cup is a useful tool for this difficult quality control that is so essential.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Coffee cup produced with high quality feldspathic porcelain. The interior conical shape has three guidelines, on relief, indicating the measure of a perfect espresso and its subsequent loss of quality.
Baristas and coffee brands can control the quantity (ml) served in order to provide a perfect experience in the tasting of their coffees.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each brand develops its espresso blend and identifies the amount of liquid to be drunk for a correct espresso. This amount is the most difficult variable to control at the bustle of a bar or cafe. The personalized guidelines present in the new cup provide this key control. With the first line from the bottom it’s possible and easy to visually check if the amount served is or not correct. The other 2 interior lines identify 2 degrees of degradation of the espresso. From another perspective, they may represent the measure of other types of coffee beyond espresso that can be served in the same cup.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It wasn’t easy to understand how we could create the interior relief effects respecting and according an automatic roller manufacturing process already implemented. It was up to us to drive the developments which then oriented the tools production by our external partners.
Our internal tests and drawings were the basis for the development of new molds to incorporate in the automatic production roller machines - respecting the
sequential movements that the machine does for the cups production. This certainly was our biggest challenge.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The tests were made in plaster molds filled manually. The molds were modified and tested again and again to produce the desired final result. The precise dimensions of the cups interior were drawn in order to the relief effects created in the interior respects the fluid dynamics required. We reach the final result after considerably trial and error but with persistently working we accomplish it.
