DESIGN NAME: LR16
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Disaster coffin
INSPIRATION: 1.Ecological issue: Haiti Earthquake: 220.000, Indian Ocean Tsunami: 230.000, Sechuan Earthquake 84.000. These numbers represents the number of corpses meaning high percent of non-biodegradable material under the ground.
2.Social/psychological issue: In a mass death scenario, squeezing victims into body bags is like bagging garbage, it adds to the trauma experienced by the survivors.
3.Practical issue: Carry a dead body in plastic bag is difficult, especially if the remains are fragmented.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: LR16 is focusing on the upcoming problems of mass death during a natural disaster situation. The key issues are the non-biodegradable material usage, lack of ergonomical construction, safetyness and consideration of the emotional factors on the side of the relatives and the rescue workers. The LR16 coffin serves to minimize contact with infected corpses.Makes easier the storage of the bodies, fully biodegradable solid construction, and give the last respect to the deceased relatives.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Bodies during a disaster scenario left unpreserved starts the decomposition process. They start to leak various fluids and gases. The corpses might be fragmented. Coffins minimize the contact, easier to transport and stack, while In a mass casualty scenario, wrapping victims into bodybags is like bagged garbage, feel the remains through the plastic layer is a horrible experience and hard to carry. It adds to the trauma experienced by the survivors. It might even lead to violent resistance.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was done as an academical research process at the University of Gothenburg in 2011.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Social Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: LR16 is molded of a bio-polymer called PLA made of organic waste material e.g. a by-product of a corn, rice, wheat industry. PLA is not harmful for the environment during cremation or dissolves within 10 years underground. The production process is vacuum-forming with only 1 type of mould needed to produce the shell which can be used as bottom or top cover. The used PLA matrix is mixed with wooden fibers in order to reduce the degradation time and increase the natural feel.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width: 640mm, Depth: 2000mm, Height: 250mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research started by analysing the rescue and reconstruction protocols of disaster situations, consultations with rescue team members, doctors and civilians participated in such a processes. Interview research with psychologists, grief psychologists about the emotional factors and pathologyst about the decomposition. Regarding to my concept base I worked with a biopolymer researching company and mechanical engineers to find the most suitable material and structure for my coffin concept.
CHALLENGE: The hardest challenge was to go back to the ancient solutions, why the coffin is the best product for a funeral. Finding pro and contra arguments and reducing aesthetical factors while increasing the production efficiency, handling ergonomy.
