DESIGN NAME: wooden ebike
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Science meets Sustainability
INSPIRATION: Besides ecological reasons, a production with CNC machinery is the most cost efficient way of production guaranteeing repeatability unlike manufacturing. This suits the purpose of a small mass production and can be still customized to meet individual demands. As a unique feature the price will be similar to an upper-class conventional bike and therefor affordable for a majority of customers. it was priced for its innovation with this 2014 Green Buddy Award and 2015 Green Product Award
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: aceteams goal was to create an electrical bicycle and build it in an environmental friendly way. In cooperation with the Faculty of Wood Science and Technology of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) the idea became reality. Combining CNC-technology and the knowledge of wood material, the first wooden E-Bike was developed. Wood is a natural material but it also binds CO2 while metal production requires an eight times higher energy input leading to increased CO2 emissions
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: we searched for a way to get a mostly CO2 neutrally electrical vehicle, with the traffic jam in every European city, we prefer bicycles,
wood that grows binds CO2, and grows right in front of our cities, we decided for ash tree which is a long fibre wood, that allows a high elasticity for our frame (used for example parallel bars, hammer shaft), so the result was less energy, less CO2 for our environment, for a comparable ebike with an outstanding design.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Projekt started 2013 in Berlin and ended 2015
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: lightweight construction makes the wooden eBike competitive with standard Pedelecs. The 17kg light bike is made of laminated ash wood. Ash wood is especially qualified for the bike frame constructions due to its outstanding performance under torsion, impact, and other stresses applied during cycling. The 250W motor supports the cyclist to a maximum speed of 25km/h over a distance of approximately 60km

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Science meets Sustainability
the difficult war to choose right dimension between the thickness of Lamination and flexibility of the wood. what weans, thicker Lamination means lower flexibility and less weight, thinner Lamination means higher flexibility with higher weight. So we started to research the best combination of of weight and flexibility, so what we did is, that we built a torsion construction, that would be able to destroy the wood in a controlled way. It took us have a tree get the best performance for our wooden ebike.
CHALLENGE: Get the right mix between, thickness of the wood, wood glue and flexibility of the wood. We had to construct a torsion machine to investigate in lot of Tests for the best composition of our frame construction. So we had first to destroy a lot of wood to get new safe frame. After that we had to check, how we can protect our frame and make it resistant against all kinds of weathers
We had the chance to use a climate box of the university in Eberswalde. Here we could simulate 5 years in 5 Month and get the results of over 40 different paints, some of them were totally gone and other looked like the 2nd day. With these informations, we started our first prototype
