DESIGN NAME: Frames 2.5
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookcase
INSPIRATION: The inspiration of the bookcase is the shape of a simple rectangular frame.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The grid is made up of 10 metal frames that can serve as a free standing bookcase or as a room divider. The "boards" have different widths and are open in the middle, allowing them to be suitable for flat objects as well as hangable items. A metal container (accessory), can serve as a planter. If desired, a glass or wooden shelf can be placed on the widest open frames.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A minimal approach to your household shelf where all the components fit into a single rectangular plank structure. When de frames are assembled the shelf has an inconsistent composition creating an interesting play of graphical lines.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The concept of this bookcase started in 2014. The first prototype was made in 2015

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Before Frames 2.5 there was Frames 2.0, Frames wall and Frames 1.0. All of them are open structured bookshelfs. However, Frames 2.5 and 2.0 are the only flat-packs. Frames 2.0 is a wooden pre version that has a grid of 12 frames that fits in two rectangles. I tried to make an even more minmal and thinner version. The metal version Frames 2.5 has a grid of 10 frames that now fits in to one rectangle.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to make a functional, exciting and subtle piece furniture out of one rectangular shape.
