DESIGN NAME: Alpod
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Futurustic Aluminum Pod House
INSPIRATION: High construction costs form part of the reason why Hong Kong people often fall short of their dream of owning property. Inspired by the theme of "VISIONS 2050 - Lifestyle and the City", ALPOD as the futuristic aluminum mobile home designed, engineered, and produced by a team of Hong Kong visionaries, have made its debut during the Hong Kong edition of the 2015 Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism Architecture (the Biennale).
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ALPOD is constructed of aluminum. Aluminum have multi-faceted advantages of being light weight, strong, corrosion resistant, and impervious to fire and wind as well as its ability to damped noise and insulate against heat and sound. Its light weight also enhances mobility, allowing a home to be moved from one place to another in an easy and convenient way without dismantling or reconstructing facilities. Moreover, aluminum can be recycled, making it a green, earth-friendly building material.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Designed as an aerodynamic structure with a futuristic aluminum shell,Alpod offers a sleek layout featuring an open plan with no columns. The large sliding glazed windows allow a harmonious nexus of the indoor and outdoor environments, ushering in natural light and air. Alpod's interior is brilliantly conceived as well with a fitted kitchen and bathrooms, plus all-inclusive air conditioning, power source, and lighting. The plug-and-play Alpod can be your primary home, suburban cottage, office, mobile shop or just a space to let your imagination roam free.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2015 in Kongkong and finished in December 2015 in China, and was exhibited in Kowloon Park, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong from 11 December 2015 to 28 February 2016.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: It’s a revolution in the building industry for us to apply aluminum materials as house structure as well as exterior and interior decoration materials. Therefore, our team conducted a lot of research and tests together with some professional architecture design institute to guarantee the performance of the aluminum pod house. Research tests included fire resistance, wind resistance, heat resistance, impact resistance, sound résistance, loading capacity and modular assembly etc. Besides, R&D on each aluminum joint parts and housing modulus are the core of the Alpod project.
CHALLENGE: Alpod has a futuristic aluminum shell and structure with many aerodynamic corners for unique signature and profile. The most challenge part is to produce the aluminum joint parts and rolled plates as per the accurate spherical or bending surface requirements. By using precious aluminum stamping and bending technology, we overcome that problem and make our Alpod looks even more stylish and futuristic than we imaged before.
