DESIGN NAME: Setback
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: Setback was inspired by my grandmothers bathtub non-slip flowers that were on the flat surface. I had always liked the tub flowers for their happy nature and also their practical use as well.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The qualities that Setback has are twofold. I was interested in starting a non verbal dialog between user and product; this is accomplished by the random flowers cut through the material to show a shadow on the ground. The shadow changes with the light source that illuminates the room giving it a different shadow pattern.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It is intended as a coffee table
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: THe project started in September 2015 in Seattle, WA and finished in October 2015 in Seattle, WA
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The setback transition from top surface to the round legs were CNC router cut. This feature completes the balanced design while also making a unique use of sculpting the wood.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: width 1066mm x depth 560mm x height 380mm
TAGS: setback, day studios, cnc, tub flowers, shadows
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research for the Setback was focused on the transition from top surface to the dowel leg. I wanted a smooth, organic appearance that typically is only seen with plastics.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge for the Setback was how to give a different appearance throughout the day and evening. Similar to a sundial, the Setbacks shadows changes throughout the day.
