DESIGN NAME: Toybic
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Personalized RC car
INSPIRATION: The main idea is to provide kids an alternative to mass-produced identical toys and inspire them to be different, to create new forms and be unique, to bring together parents with kids, to learn 3D modeling and printing technologies, to give an opportunity to enjoy interactivity of games in the real life, to let them share knowledge and communicate, to give a better understanding of sustainability, recycling and replace 'bought, gave away and forgot' with 'let's create, make and play together'.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Toybic is the next generation of personalized remote-controlled toy car that can be custom-designed via online application and 3D-printed at home or any other 3D printing location. The platform provides user an opportunity to enjoy the interactivity of virtual games in a real world. Real-life RC cars encourage users' creativity to build new designs, learn 3D modeling and printing, communicate and share with others and promote sustainability (old or broken parts can be simply re-printed).
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Interchangeable parts are easily attachable to the main body with neodymium magnets. Product design look can be created via main web-page 3D editor from standard parts and files uploaded by users. Custom designs can be created with any 3D modeling software and printed out with any 3D printer. Toy can be controlled from any smartphone or tablet and, if required, provide user an image of surroundings via build-in camera. Shooting and received damage metering is revealed within the application.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2014 and finished in April 2015 in Kaunas (KTU), and was exhibited in KTU Santakos Slenis in May 2015 and in LitExpo at "Innovation Drift 2015" in September 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Product comes in two parts: the base (single unit housing all of the electronics) and the body (all 3D printable pieces). This means user could have one base, with a series of different body designs and interchangeable parts. It allows to buy the finished model or 3D print only desired parts for assembly. Different game scenarios inspired by incorporating a variety of features into models: WiFI connectivity, magnetic field detection, built-in camera, infra-red receivers, speakers and other.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Permanent main base dimensions are 295mm x 200mm x 85mm. Other designs may vary according to the different designs and user preferences.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Scientific research and experimental work with objectives to create a next generation open-source platform available for everyone with high flexibility of usage scenarios, interactivity of playing, creation of different emotional characters and possibility to grow a community of different age users. Design should be abstract enough and futuristic as much as possible and at the same to remind of products and technology we use nowadays to provide a way of alternative future scenario.
CHALLENGE: Balance between nowadays car design and historical dimensions between axes should be combined with military style that is amplified with abstractionism and hyperbolized characteristics. Bionic motives and aerodynamic forms must find balance with aggressive angles and sharp edges as well as parts of different character need to be interchangeable among each other and be printable with the most popular 3D printers (printing surface limitations, printability and supports for magnet holders).
