DESIGN NAME: ThreeSixty
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting element for public spaces
INSPIRATION: Modularity and customizability are the starting points of this project. First references can be identified in Lego bricks, partly because the LED modules are often anonymous and boxy. Deciding to develop a unique element that would allow a total and constant customization, we were inspired by a quote from the director of MoMA, Paola Antonelli, who spoke about Walkman/iPod as something insignificant, but at the same time capable of creating your own atmosphere even in a chaotic environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ThreeSixty is a public spaces lighting system which anticipates the need to shift the focus of the lighting world from an "electro-technical" vision to pure electronics. Indeed, with the advent of LEDs and other wireless units, this is the direction that many leading companies in the lighting field are following. ThreeSixty allows the best use of the opportunities provided by LED modules, a solution developed by many companies nowadays that optimizes the possibility of directing the light.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: ThreeSixty can be set in nine different position in order to obtain nine different lighting effects. It is designed to be remotely controlled and to work combined with proximity sensors. These features allow the creation of interactive environments in public spaces. Light settings can be quickly be changed depending on the atmosphere that is needed for the specific environment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was developed during a workshop in December 2014, supervised by Francesco Zurlo (Politecnico di Milano) and Carlo Magistretti (Poltrona Frau, Cassina, Castaldi Lighting, Sohba LLC).

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: ThreeSixty is a complex lighting system mainly produced by die-cast aluminum. It consist in four main elements: the support and attachment for vertical surfaces, the main driver compartment, the rotating system and cable compartment, and the LED module cases (X2). The main driver and the led modules are external elements.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Since the project is born as a lighting system for museum spaces, the first part of the research consisted in a on-site analysis of museums lighting techniques and devices. After collecting information from direct observation, we analyzed how the different museum areas are lit and why. With this diagram it was possible to infer that every space need a specific lighting fixture. This was the starting point for the subsequent analysis regarding the technologies that we applied; from the LED modules to the electronics of movement.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging design problem was to create a shell for something existing (boring boxy shape) that had to be extremely functional, aesthetically appealing and innovative. The other problem was to design a single element which had to allow lighting customization for the environment every time it's needed.
