DESIGN NAME: Negative
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Arm chair
INSPIRATION: A chair being an element in architectural spaces was our main vision for this design. Wanting to minimize the negative visual impacts but enhancing the functionality we came up with the question: How can a furniture exists and not exists at the same time?
Hence the idea to use only the negative space of a chair alongside the use of a transparent material.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Negative chair is not a rigid object in space. The chair is built by using the negative space of a regular chair.
Our choice of fabric in this design (spandex), not only is transparent but at the same time it supports the force of gravity and disperses this force onto the structure. Ergonomic design, simple and organic form, the light material and transparency enhances the consistency of the space and showcases the process of sitting of the user and creating a new form.
There is no chair!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Ergonomic design, simple and organic form, the light material and transparency enhances the consistency of the space and showcases the sitting process of the user, and depending of the body type and height, it creates a new form, and allows a more comfortable sitting experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2014 in Tehran an finished in August 2015 in Tehran, and was exhibited in OBJET / 01 / EXHIBITION / CHAIR DESIGN SHOW in Gallery NO 1, Niavaran Cultural Center in September 2015 in Tehran.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The 4 way stretch mesh fabric is cut into 4 double layer pieces and sewn together. Two frames of 700 x 700 mm is built. The fabric is glued to both our frames.
The main structure is made of two 700 x 700 mm squared frames connected together with 3 horizontal braces soldered on the bottom and in the back. A 25 x 4 mm iron is used to create a belt to cover both sides of the structure for embedment of the frames. The two frames with fabrics are then fitted on each side of the structure.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our first research was regarding the process of impact and change of furniture in architectural spaces.
Next step, the use of negative spaces in fine art was evaluated.
At last the ergonomic and anthropometric of human body and the shearing behavior of different fabrics was researched in order to reach our design goals.
CHALLENGE: The most important challenge was to find a sewing pattern and most importantly finding a mathematical relation between dimensions of the pattern and the physical properties of the fabric. To find such a fabric in Iran specially with the embargo was a very difficult task.
