DESIGN NAME: Barin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ski Resort
INSPIRATION: Barin picks up on the philosophy of designing buildings so that the form emulates the immediate environment in a fluid way.Nestled into the mountain range near Shemshak, the resort building looks one with the snow covered mountain, almost as if windswept onto the mountain side, like an iced rock formation. The individuals rooms seem carved into a mountainous ice block like natural caves. Each cell which is in dome shape, enhances the feeling of a warm, homely cave to relax in after skiing out in cold.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This ten-story resort is located in the heart of mountain on Shemshak, the second largest ski area in Iran,in only half an hour drive from the capital. This location is defined by Snow-covered landscapes,so we didn't want the building to be indifferent about its surrounding, but as a part of nature embracing that. There are 67 unit types differing from 45m studio flat to 270m penthouse .Inside the rooms all the necessities are defined in the main body to provide the space purity and integrity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project makes a significant positive contribution to the natural fabric of Shemshak. By integrating into surrounding environment, this resort knit together the natural landscapes of the region into the built environment and provide a holistic building that complements its natural habitat.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2008 and completed in 2011 in Shemshak, Iran.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The challenge here was to find a modern material that can easily withstand the extremely cold weather conditions, offer a sustainable solution and at the same time mirror the texture of snow. After extensive research, we chose to use a composite of diatomite earth, also known as a 'Japanese wall'. The reason why this material is an ideal choice is because the chalk-like surface not only perfectly blends in with the snow-covered mountains but more importantly it is an efficient heat insulator.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project's area is 12,000 square meters with approximately 1,200 square meters in each floor with 6,000 square meters plot area.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For the first time in our country we developed CAD/CAM techniques to design and fabricate the sculptural components of this large-scale building. In this method we benefit minimizing the construction time and budget which was a great achievement for us .Different teams in different places manufactured the components .These components later were delivered to the project site for assembly with low skilled labor and the lowest discrepancy between digital representation and built artifact.
CHALLENGE: The base build had already been completed when we were brought on board to design the resort. The main structure and ceiling had been built in a cube shape, but we felt it was alien to the naturally sloping mountain formation. So, It was a great challenge for us to transform it to something more relevant to its context and function. Extreme weather condition which affects construction operations was another obstacle. To overcome it, the building was constructed as a prefabricated project.
