| DESIGN NAME: Canoe PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cat Bed INSPIRATION: The inspiration is rooted in simple and functional forms and the appreciation of materials and construction methods bringing to each task a contemporary aesthetic with a bold ethnic content. This cultural emphasis is based on a research I conducted after a year of fieldwork with indigenous communities throughout the Colombian territory. This resulted in the publication of the book "Principles of Indigenous Design" and I have been applying those design fundamentals to my pieces ever since. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Canoe is a cat bed made out of fique, a natural fiber still spun by hand and then knitted into an exceptional fabric made by artisans from a Colombian rural region. The shape that hosts the cat is the result of gracefully folding and securing the opposite sides of the fabric with leather cords intertwined forming x shaped stitches. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Cats love fique. Just leave Canoe on the floor or above the sofa and the cat will jump inside. Just as simple as that. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started during the spring of 2015 in the Santader Region, Colombia and finished in the Miami Ft. Lauderdale area in August 2015. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The hand knitted textile is made out of fique, other materials used are: leather cords, hand woven mini balls, beach stones, metallic rattle and felt balls. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 650 mm x Depth 360 mm x Height 80 mm TAGS: cat, bed, fique, natural, textile, pet, fiber, design, toy, ethnic, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project started as a personal interest regarding the exaltation of our traditions though artifacts. The goal now is to empower artisans through design and help them to remain on the market with innovative products throughout a creative design process driven by cultural exchange; maintaining their authentic woven patterns but giving new ideas and concepts. CHALLENGE: At the beginning of the project there were doubts regarding fique exportation laws. On 07/15/15 the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture certified the fique cultivation. Also German ecofriendly dye colors are used so there are not pollution issues regarding coloring the fique fibers. Also, managing the width restrictions of the knitted textile was a challenge during the conceptualization. NAME: Paula Gomez Serrano PROFILE: KUATRO is an industrial design studio based in South Florida, specialized in design services and solutions for both residential and commercial use. Our goal is to interpret the client needs giving sense and functionality to the project. The basis for our designs is rooted in simple and functional forms and the appreciation of new materials and construction methods. We bring to each task a contemporary aesthetic that emphasizes the values of clarity and simplicity. Aligned with this problem-solving exercise, we also guide our customers through regulatory issues, budget concerns, structural requirements, sustainable measures, environmental responsibility, material choices and functional needs to ultimately help them arrive at a place of ease and clarity. Paula Gomez Serrano - BA Industrial Design from Bogotá - Colombia, with more than 15 years of experience in Furniture Design, began her career working for the acclaimed designers at SOTTSASS ASSOCIATI in Italy. Also has worked in the Exhibit Design area for 7 years at CORFERIAS (Leader Convention Center and Exhibition Fairgrounds - Bogotá). Since 2006 has been living in USA designing mostly custom furniture and interior spaces. |
